The nurses give such broad and rather large explanations (mostly with all the "worst case scarios"), rather than whats the "normal" scenario. I am seeing the Surgeon the day before to go through any questions etc, but i was really just curious to see if anyone else has had this done in the past year or so...

Hmmmm, some mixed messages from all of these posts. The way I understand it from my surgeon is that a bowl resection is only necessary if during the procedure it becomes evident that the endo has penetrated the organ and implanted in the muscular and visceral tissue rather than just adhering to the surface of the organ. So, if my endo has not penetrated my bowls or intestinal tract, OR implanted itself on a surface areas that cannot be reached for excision (cutting away and removing all diseased tissue to clarify between excision and resection), then a resection will not be necessary. Honestly, GI issues and IBS are such a huge symptomatic factor with my endo that I would opt for the resection on this first procedure if Dr. Albee thought it was absolutely necessary. Having a colonoscopy prior to my lap is one of the best things I could have done. That procedure did not reveal any abnormalities so 1) it rules out any colon issues that might be causing my pain and 2) it is a good indicator that the endo has probably not penetrated the bowl walls and that helps me to think it through a little better before I have to make what could be life changing decisions prior to my procedure next month.

No one has posted here in a really long time but I wanted to ask if anyone has had a bowel resection and what recovery is like. I am 5 weeks post op. I had a hysterectomy, right ovary removed, excision of Endo and a bowel resection. I had a lesion about the size of a walnut on my colon. Since then I have had problems with having normal bowel movements. The diet you have to go on for a week after the surgery is hell and I started slowly back on normal foods after that. I have been eating somewhat normally for about 2 weeks now. I still occasionally have diarrhea and it's normally when I have too much food, or eat something spicy. Today however, I thought I had to pass gas and I just crapped my pants. Excuse the language but that is what I did. I had a big mess, sat on the toilet and cried. I am frustrated with the diarrhea and wonder if anyone has had this before and is this normal for the surgery I have had. Dr. Redwine told me that expected recovery time is 6-8 weeks, so I am still in that time frame and maybe a bit premature for wondering.

Hello everyone- I see it's been a bit since anyone has posted here and I hope all who have had a resection are doing well. I have had a recent trip to the gyn and he believes I may have some bowel endometriosis. I have many symptoms that you all have described here. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping it's just something like celiac or IBS. During my last laparoscopy a few years ago, I was diagnosed with stage 4 endo and it was on my colon, although just superficial. The actual pain is different this time though, and my tummy stays so bloated I feel as if I could float away! I feel like one of the floats at the Macy's day parade! LOL My doctor wants to do another laparoscopy in the next couple months, but wants me to meet with a general surgeon beforehand to get some GI test done to see if it has penetrated the bowel. I have an appointment with the general surgeon soon and would love to hear how you all are doing now in the years and months since you've had your bowel surgeries. Has your quality of life improved, or did the surgery make it worse? Any imput would be most appreciated! Thanks girls!

I am relatively new here, but I have some thoughts on this. I had a colon resection in Feb, I had a stricture and they did not know why. They definitely knew it was there, they couldn't even get a pedi scope through in my colonoscopy. Turns out it was endo with the left ovary stuck to the sigmoid colon, with lots of scar tissue built up so my colon was about the width of a pencil! That was my diagnosis of endo (somewhat surprising). Right before I was going to meet with an endo specialist I had a small bowel obstruction. Turns out in my lap in Aug there was a ton of endo still on the colon, and some on the small bowel to cause the other obstruction (my first lap was six hours, even after the resection since the ob-gyn who removed the ovary was not an endo specialist).
I am still getting used to my new body, but my bowels have definitely improved especially after the lap with the endo doc. My advice is to find an endo specialist and maybe have both surgeons in on the surgery. For me, a resection was definitely needed for the colon because it was far gone, but it also needed endo excised off the outsides (hard to know that when you didn't know you had endo!) Imaging, like colonoscopy with a GI, can be helpful to see how the colon is looking from the inside. Let me know how things go!

Thank you Tamela and semicolon for your info! So glad to hear your surgeries turned out well. My doctor did mention to me that he would have the general surgeon scrubbed in during my next lap just in case, regardless of what the tests the surgeon does shows. The gyn I go to teaches doctors all over the country to use laparoscopy and says he excises the endometriosis. I wish I could afford to go to Atlanta, but it is not possible with my insurance only paying half as it is out of network. But I do trust this doctor and he has a really good reputation. The last lap I had was not excision, so I am anxious to tell the difference. I will keep everyone posted of my progress. Thanks again!

You should definitely check out the bowel prep thread, lots of good info. Are you having excision with a specialist at the same time?
