For all the ladies who have had a bowel resection, any tips you may have for me would be great!
I have stage 4 endo that has penetrated through my large bowel and through into my vagina behind my cervix. I don't know just how bad it is elsewhere as I did not have a lap but was diagnosed by having a sigmoidoscopy where they took a sample of the abnormal tissue in my bowels that came back as endo.
After being sent from doctor to doctor who said they couldn't help me, I was finally sent to a great gyne-oncologist who is able to help me. I am scheduled to have a total abdominal hysterectomy and oopherectomy with a bowel resection on July 13. I have been reading and reading as much as I can, but if anyone has anything that they wish they could have done differently had they had the choice I would love to know! Or just any pre-op or post-op tips would be great!
Thanks!

BUY a grab-it for after the sugery since bending is out for a couple of weeks and hit the hyster-sister website now for the swelly belly care package!! Also when you hit weeks 3-4 after you might feel like your almost better... DONT overdo it like I did! Give yourself all the time that the doctor suggests. I'm still getting the swelly belly and I am now at 6 weeks from only a lapartomy left oopherectomy and tube removal. Hister sisters says six months and you can still get swelly belly at the end of a long day. The abdomnial binder that was given me at the hospital is necassary to help with swelling and even for sleeping at night if your a side sleeper like myself. It keeps the stress off the belly and makes it easier to turn over. (the abdominal care package at hyster sisters has what you need. Also getting into bed for the first couple of weeks is really hard. If you put a chair by your bed you can use it to get your feet in and out although you may still need help to get out. I would lift my feet onto the chair and then onto the bed in shorter steps and it worked without pulling those core muscles. Do you have someone to take care of you???
Oh and if your a reader stock up on books, if you watch movies stock up on movies and if you need to get out of the house but know you can't walk that far don't be embarrased. Grab a ride on the 'crip carts' at Safeway and walmarts. I made the mistake at week three thinking I might be able to slowly walk walmart and I felt like I was going to pass out I was in so much pain by the time I got back to the car. Use the cart! We even had fun with the 'go carts' as we called them! My hubby would go get one and bring it to the car and then he would ride it back. If I think of anything else would you like me to PM you???

Hmm, I don't know that any of our active members at the moment have had a bowel resection, thus your lack of replies!
Although a bowel resection is certainly necessary in some cases due to blockage, it's quite a serious operation with a long recovery and it's usually only done if absolutely necessary. I know many more women that have had endo on their bowels excised than have had a bowel resection. Why do you ask? Have you had blockage problems?

I had excision from my bowel and rectum with my last lap and that took me 2 weeks to get back to normal on, it hurt sooo much to have a BM, so I have huge respect for people who've had more extensive excision or a resection! I think it'd be a great idea to post a seperate poll if you'd like to Jennifer

Hi I had my double bowel re section in June 2007. Im still suffering from it and have been in menopause ever since.
i have since found out i had 50cm of bowel and a segment of rectum removed. I had a bladdrer segment, my appendix removed, my L tube removed and 2 bi lateral 9cm endometriomas removed from both ovaries.
the laparotomy went for nearly 8 hours in total. Please feel free to ask me any questions or PM me if you like and I will respond as soon as i can.
I had 3-4 months off work, couldnt leave the house as i suffered severe diarrhea. i still do but a little more manageable.
at the moment im awaiting further surgery to remove my remaining tube as it is stuck to my bowel and im risking more bowel out and a potentially a bag. but as long as they know what they are doing its fine by me.
please feel free to ask anythign and i promise to reply as best i can!

I just had a bowel resection on June 14h. They removed 10 in of my intestines. There was a big mass attached to the intestine. According to the Dr. it was a big mass of endo. I had 2 surgeons work on me that day. One did the bowel resection and the other removed scar tissue and cysts on both my overies. I was in the hospital for a week. When I went home I started to get a fever and pain in my right side. I went back to the hospital and they found an abscess the size of an orange. Unfortunately they could not drain it with a needle because the abscess was in an area they could not reach. I stayed in the hospital for a few days on antibiotics. They sent me home on antibiotics hoping the abscess would clear. No such luck. I say my Dr a week later and he did another CT scan. The abscess never shrunk therefore they had no choice but to send me back in the operation room. So needless to say I had 2 surgeries in 2 weeks. I am a bit better now. They still have the tube in my side draining the abscess. Hopefully it will come out soon. Overall the recovery has been slow. If I did not get an infection I believe I would have been back on my fet sooner. The only problems I feel now, is bloating. Not sure how to help this. I have stage 4 endo ( 6 surgeries). I am seeing my gyno this week and he will put me on Lupron once again. I really want to have children. So after the Lupron I will go for IVF again( Ontario Gov't pays for 3 cycles of IVF if both tubes are blocked). Hopefully something good will happen. I just hope the endo stays away for a while. I give myself 2 more years and then I will have it all removed. Fingers crossed..

Oh, no, sounds rough! Glad you're doing a bit better now, though, and hopefully you have nothing but a strong recovery ahead of you!

Thank you everyone for your wishes. I have an appointment on Monday to see if the abscess shrunk. If it did they will remove the drainage tube I have. I also saw my gyno today and I will be going on Lupron (I was on it a few years ago) to help keep the endo under control. In a few months we will try IVF. So we shall see. I got pregnant before but miscarried at 12 weeks. So who knows. I give it 2 more years and if nothing happens then I will Take it all out.

Hi Ladies I have just had a fexible sigmoidoscopy done today, only to be told i now need a bowel ressection. Needless to say im not excited about this. I have had 2x surgeries in the past 18 months, for stage 4 endo, the other for adhesions after the first surgery. So now this... I have just started my first cycle of clomiphene, so am nervous that this will play havoc with what might hopefully be working. Has anyone else who has had a resection, did you have a nasal feeding tube? Catherter etc? How long did it take you to recover from the surgery as im told the ports that they will open up are far more substantual than our wee lap endo surgery ports. Im feeling a little over whelmed in all honesty....

I haven't, my bosses son has undergone a few because he has Chrohns (he's only 16, bless him). I think he tends to have a nasal feeding tube. Maybe you could ask your nurse what to expect?
