I got the Paragard at Planned Parenthood before I even suspected or knew what endo was and when I told the Nurse Practitioner about my family history she automatically told me to go with Paragard. I had been having 6 day, heavy, painful bleeds on any BCP I've tried and even worse without BCPs. The pain I am having with the Paragard is about the same as before I got it, maybe slightly elevated.
My gyno's point is that while the Paragard is shown to cause increaded pain and bleeding, it is not the root of the problem. Rather, it is putting more strain on my already stressed out pelvis. I am very stubborn and did not want to agree with her at first, but I know that at the very least the Paragard should come out.

I agree, Paragard may not be the cause of all the issues. There are some women that don't realize it can increase the evil effects of a period with us endo ladies, so I had to at least ask. Glad you're not in the dark about that!

Thanks, I just kind of wanted to put all of that out there and "think out loud". Trying to not be so stubborn!

Well, I think it was me that called it a torture device at some point. But, before my lap last week I briefly discussed with consultant about trying it again. When I told him specifically what the issues were last time (I felt like I was in slow labour for 4 months) he suggested not. But I did consider it, briefly, as a means to try and slow the endo down. Having had an IUD already, your uterus is likely used to the 'foreign body' and may not try to expel it the way mine did. And I agree too, if it's something you want to try and cross it off your list, give it a go. It's quickly and easily removed.

This time around I will probably take a day off of work when I get it inserted. Last time I went straight from the clinic to my job and was miserable. Not this time! I really like my new gyno because she isn't giving me a ton of slack. If I am really serious about minimizing my pain, I am going to have to try some of her suggestions. What I am doing right now obviously isn't working, so might as well try some other things on the list. However, I am staying pretty firm that Lupron is a last resort. It may be frustrating for some, but she is calling me out on my stubborn bullsh*t in a kind way.

Other than the insertion, the only bad experience I've had with the Paragard was my first period on it. I nearly fainted from the massive blood loss and was in a lot of pain. I ended up having to cut a vacation short to go get checked out. I'm hoping that this does not happen with the Mirena. I don't have pain for about 2 weeks out of the month, which is why I've stuck with the Paragard for as long as I have. I think that thinking about this combined with the stress of grad school and work has taken its toll on me. Had my first really bad migraine in about 5 years yesterday. Have an awful "migraine hangover" today.

My new gyne also wants me to try Mirena, but frankly, this thread and other things I've read about it have scared me. I'm going to have a discussion with him at my pre-op.
Hope you're feeling better today, Emily.

Thanks, I am much better. I'm pretty scared to try the Mirena, but I would rather do that than Lupron.

Well, I gave the Mirena the old college try. I had it for exactly 4 weeks but had it removed yesterday. I was so desperate that I went to a clinic because I could not wait until my gyno could get me in. That thing was hellish, but not actually painful, I guess my uterus is used to an IUD from the Paragard. Hot flashes, anxiety attacks, depression, awful acne, weight gain, mood swings, migraines, and crying all of the time. So glad it's over and I can go back to being myself! Not sure what I will being doing next, seeing my gyno in 2 weeks. No more hormones, that's for sure!

I just got the mirena inserted yesterday after trying nearly every birth control pill around and endo Immediately the pain became 100 times worse. The dr made me lie down in the office for about 45 mins until they were sure I wouldn't pass out. They said the pain would slowly get better in a few days. I woke up in the middle of the night crying in pain and it's so intense I can't focus on anything else. After he inserted it he was talking about how my uterus is severely anteverted. Is this much pain normal??!!

Hi vweiss, I had the mirena inserted in April of this year. I know the day I had it inserted was misery. The actual insertion was very painful and I had really bad cramps for the next couple of days. Several days after it was inserted I started my period (again - as you should be near the end of your period when you have it inserted) and it was very heavy and painful. As the months have progressed, my actual periods have gotten lighter and lighter - to the point that now I only very lightly "spot" for a couple of days. My pain (assuming it's endo until I get an official diagnosis next week after my lap) has gotten worse since getting the iud. My doctor thinks it is because I came off of the birth control pill to the lower dose iud and not because of the iud itself. I get severe migraines and my general doctor insisted no more hormone pills, but that the mirena iud would be okay, since it's a small dose and very localized. I have decided to have my lap, see if the doctor can determine what is causing my pain, and stick with the iud for the time being. If my pain does not get better after the lap, then I may just go ahead and have the iud removed just in case it is the cause of some of my pain. I love the reduction in period volume and time, though... It just seems as if that would be a good thing with endometriosis.

When I got my first IUD (Paragard) about 1 1/2 years ago, I had very similar pain to yours. I haven't had kids yet and was told that the pain is more severe for women without children - not sure if that is the case for you. The Mirena is also slightly larger than the Paragard.
I had really heavy bleeding and a lot of pain, so I had the Paragard switched out for the Mirena in June of this year. Since my uterus was used to a foreign object in it, it wasn't as bad, but still painful. I only lasted a month on the thing because of side effects from the hormones. I hope that this is a good option for you and that it helps with your endo symptoms! Good luck!

I haven't had any kids yet either. It's so painful and I can barely move. The doctors office said that was normal, but first they told me the pain would slowly taper. After reading this forum it looks very common to have this pain. I just keep getting scared it's embedding itself or something is wrong and I don't know how you tell. This is my first hormone replacement therapy that hasn't been in pill form. Thanks for the advice
