oh Hannah, this is horrible. The Mirena was, hands down, the WORST experienced. I had all of that cervix positioning bullsh*t too. so horrible. but the fact that they can't find it is so scary. I hope you're fast asleep now, and get that straightened out SOON.

It's out and I'm fine now!! Meant to update this yesterday but forgot.
It was still in my uterus, but my uterus was trying really hard to expel it and as a result of all the spasming it was doing trying to get it out, it managed to turn the Mirena sideways and swallow it! Fortunately, it was sitting really low in my uterus (just couldn't fall out because of the position it had gone into) and they were able to remove it after a LOT of poking around and maneuvering with a variety of speculums (speculi?) and a coil retrieval tool, which is a thin instrument with a hook that they stuck through my cervix, swirled around and 'fished' the Mirena out with. It was quite an experience, but I'm so happy I didn't need another op to get it out! However, having been through all of that wide awake and with no pain relief, can't say I'd have minded being under general for that! Ouch!!
Because of the location of my pain, no one expected it to still be in my uterus, but it turns out that because of the combination of my having a VERY anteverted uterus--titlted forward, which is the normal tilt except that mine is tilted in the extreme and points straight out at like a 90 degree angle--and the position that the Mirena had gone into, the IUD was just resting against places it shouldn't be, resulting in me feeling deferred pain from what ever nerve it was pressing on. My pain completely disappeared as soon as the Mirena was out; it was ridiculous. I went into the treatment room limping and walked out practicaly skipping! Came home last night and slept like a baby. Even went back to work today (much to their shock and horror; they were all geared up for me to be having another lap).
Anyhoo. Mirena is gone now and life is beautiful(ish) again. AND it's Friday. Yay!
PS: If anyone reading this has a tipped uterus and is considering an IUD, bear in mind they generally make for difficult insertions and removals and might not be the best option (NOW they tell me this!).

Hannah, I'm so so so glad that your uterus wasn't perforated. Your experience sounds SO damn similar to mine, except I managed to expel the thing, partially. But I also have a tipped uterus and they never told me that made teh whole insertion/expulsion thing worse. Makes sense, now that I think about it. And oh my dear god that thing was HORRIBLE. So glad it's out.

Thanks guys, I'm thrilled it's out too. I feel silly for even bothering with the Mirena after the horrible experiences I've had with every other type of hormonal contraception. But it was literally the last thing on the list that I hadn't tried, so at least I gave it a go and can eliminate it as an option now.
I feel great but appear to be starting a fresh period right after the bleed with the Mirena was drying up. Hopefully it's just leftovers coming out and won't mean I end up having a 14 day period.

I went through the same process, Hannah. I knew the mirena was a bad idea, but I needed to try it, just to say I'd done everything. And, there was always the chance that it would help. But that was really my final attempt with "traditional" medicine. Even though, every time I live through an agonizing 7 - 10 days around ovulation, it's SO tempting to go back on some pill or patch or ring; deal with the bleeding/flooding, depression, and loss of sexual desire; and not have that pain. meh--endo is as much a mental disease as a physical one, I think sometimes.
Glad it's out, and I hope the bleeding stops for you soon.

I'm reposting my question here because I skimmed through every post in this thread and couldn't find anyone with symptoms quite like mine.
I had my surgery in April 2010 and then in June, went with the Mirena IUD and have had it since. I'm now starting to experience extreme rectal pain & pain with BMs (TMI I know!). Has anyone else had this happen?? It's gotten to the point were I have to suffer at work through the pain and contemplate not going in quite often.
HELP!

Hi. I see the questions are from years ago but if anyone is wondering, I have literally tried EVERYTHING in western medicine, now looking to eastern but can't afford it. Anyways, when I was going to a pain clinic in my city for very severe endo, I'm 27 and have had since my periods started. Really bad since 17. Anyways I had the Mirena inserted and my doc said to do it cause it worked well with his daughter (he also put me on addicting sleeping meds cause he was on them) needless to say I hate him cause I bled NON STOP with that thing in. I've tried Lupron, made me too sick to work. Have had 4 surgeries and am on lots of pain killers which don't do a whole lot for me anymore but ruin my life as I'm addicted and always running out early. I've done pelvic physio which helped but it's not covered and I took bc non stop and it gave me a huge blot clot that went through my heart into my lung and I was a day away from dying cause my other doc wouldn't look into my symptoms of chest pain. I'm so angry. Lost my house, family members want nothing to do with me, have no friends and I can't work and haven't for 4 years so I have no money at all. Sorry for venting I'm just done with all this.

CC, my pain was like Hannah has just been describing, low down cramps. Like contractions. I don't know if I could say it caused rectal pain but your vagina and rectum are very close together!
Malpal, sorry you feel so bad. I think you need to do some serious searching for a good doc to help you through this.

Could it be that the Mirena isn't "stopping" from end from spreading/growing? I've heard both theories about Mirena and what the purpose of it is. It just feels like the pain is coming back and stronger & in new areas. I know I had it in the cul-de-sac area when my doc did the first surgery so I wonder if it's spread there. I just called & scheduled an appt to see him...9th of December. More waiting.....hopefully I'll get answers.

Weird that you said like contractions because I was just telling my husband that it felt like I was going into labour!

I had from end of Dec to around May and it was like being in labour for 5 months. Pain was worse than any other I'd known through endo - totally horrific and random. Started about 3 days after it was put in (which happened to be Christmas Dat and I was making dinner!) and it was just horrible.

I'm starting to think it might not be the Mirena since I've had it for almost a year and a half and just started having more pain now.

Hard to tell after that length of time I guess. It could have moved and that's what's causing the pain, or it could be totally unrelated. Go get it checked out!

So I went to see my doctor and he doesn't think the endo has come back....he says the chances of that happening while I have the Mirena are next to impossible but I don't know if I completely believe that. This is the same pain, along with increased pain in different areas, including my bladder & bowels. He thinks I have a really bad UTI so he put me on two strong antibiotics but he did book me for another surgery just in case the antibiotics don't work. Then he said when he does the lap this time, he'll check my bladder b/c he didn't last time. It bothered me b/c he kept telling my husband and I that it was just because I "needed to relax" and that maybe why I have pain during sex. My husband thinks I should go and get a second opinion from another doctor...even though that would require us driving 4 hours away instead of just 45 minutes. He told me that sometimes you just have to "suck it up" and I told him I've sucked up for months and that just resulted in the pain going from a few times a week to every single day!! I'm beyond frustrated at this point. Any advice?
