www.paleoforwomen.com/carbohydrates-for-fertility-and-health/I recently found this blog and keep finding great applicable posts. I thought this would be useful for other women eating paleo. We are not little men and we should be eating higher carb so tubers and fruits are our friends. ESPECIALLY if you have thyroid or adrenal issues. karen - Do you like avocadoes? I just found a salmon patty recipe that uses avocado to hold them together. I love paleo for women and especially that post. I eat a good amount of potato, sweet potato, rice. Jaye, I was wondering if you managed to figure out the key for putting weight back on with this diet? With all the health issues I'm getting down pretty low plus my dexa scan just revealed osteopenia, so need to step up the weight bearing exercise. Going out tonight to stock up on kale and collard greens!

Kelly, First thought - Eat lots of good fats and starches. Add ghee, lard, tallow, or coconut oil to everything. Eat lots of starchy tubers, maybe even at every meal if you can stand it. Fruit, too. I love sweet potato topped with coconut oil, home-made french fries made with tallow, Beets covered in grass-fed butter. I even make fruit bowls with coconut oil mixed in. I have always been on the too-thin side (muscle-y though). My weight floats from 132 to 140 (I'm 5'8") depending on how much physical labor I'm doing. When I first started paleo and was relearning how to eat, I got ripped looking. Too thin, not enough subq fat. After a couple months I got back to my normal. Now, after more than a year, I actually gained a little seasonal fat. I love it! I don't know if the gluten factor was keeping me from gaining fat? Or if my resolving nutrient deficiencies are letting me put on weight like a normal person. I eat as much as I want. I even tend to boredom eat now and then, though I mainly just eat when I'm hungry. I also tend to eat seasonally. I've been eating more fat and nuts and starchy tubers now that it's fall. That has definitely helped me gain fat. (last night I ate pecans dipped in grass-fed butter OMG so good!) I also do body weight exercises (push-ups, planks and squats to failure) for strength maintenance. That affects my weight, however it's muscle. That's all my background on weight. So long story short, based on my experience - Focus on eating lots of good fats and healthy carbs, get nutrient sufficient, and eat clean. Hope this helps. -J

Thanks for the great reply Jaye. I have been doing many of those things. Coconut oil - I love the taste, love it, but it usually makes me nauseous a couple minutes afterwards. (??) I was reading on some paleo sites that this happens for some people. I eat a ton of tubers and grassfed butter (mmm, Kerrygold), almond butter, fruits, white rice. I think the problem was I wasn't eating consistently since I've been fighting with nausea. It all seems to be exacerbated by my stress over my weight, so I asked my husband to hide the scale from me. Now that I've got a ryhthm with this new way of eating, I'm going to focus on just relaxing.
Do you gain weight when doing the strength exercises?
Your post has given me lots of hope.

I think you are right on with hiding the scale and relaxing, and just eating everything you want. Stress can have such a powerful effect. I've heard that, too, that some people don't tolerate coconut oil. You reminded me of nut butters! Almond butter and apple is one of the best flavor combinations. Nausea is tough. I don't get nausea but I do lose my appetite around my pain day. I notice, though, that during ovulation and pre-menstrually I am ravenous. I don't count calories, but I'm guessing my calorie intake on those days is astronomical. Maybe that makes up for the days when I'm near fasting. Maybe during the times when you are hungry you could just go all out to make up for the calorie deficit when you are nauseated? Yes. I do gain weight when I'm doing enough bodyweight exercises to build muscle. -J

I didn't know about paleo diet until recently and now I think I'm cooking more healthy food. The only thing is I need to figure out a way to curb my constant snacking (which is a huge no no) maybe it's because I keep skipping breakfast. I have a problem with my weight, I'm scared to gain weight thanks to all the nasty comments I get from those around me that I try to skip meals and then snack.

I"m a gluten free vegetarian who eats very little sugar and processed foods and I still feel that my diet is keeping me sick. For the past few months I've been totally craving meat, and I haven't eaten any for about 25 years! I'm considering trying the paleo diet for a few weeks to see how I fee. That is if I can get past the first few bits of flesh!
Currently I do a lot of blending and juicing. I consume a crazy amount of raw fruit and veggies, starting with a huge green smoothie every morning. I eat a lot of nuts and yogurt and beans, all of which I'll have to stop if I go paleo.
I used to think that my diet was super duper healthy. But I'm currently overweight, sluggish and bloated. I want to get rid of this bloat and inflammation so bad! Hopefully adding meat and fat and cutting out fruit, nuts, and dairy that I thought was so healthy will help.
Wish me good luck!

Good luck! The folks over at the Whole9 forums have some stories to share about former vegetarians going paleo and feeling lots better, though everyone is different. Might be worth checking out some tips there or elsewhere to slowly introduce meat if that's the route you go.
The interesting thing is that once people go super paleo and eliminate so many of the foods that 'mainstream' society says are healthy foods, many people are able to pinpoint what's triggering bloating, and often raw veggies and nuts are at the top of people's lists. Dairy and beans make me super bloated and constipated, too, though everyone is different! Good luck and let us know how your experiment goes!

Thanks Karen! I just checked out Whole9 real quick and it looks like it will be a good resource. I'm going to do a lot more reading and planning, and find a good natural meat provider near me so I stay ethical and consume the best quality meat. I think I'll start with wild caught fish because I do occasionally eat that. It's gonna be a huge change for me and I"m kinda excited!
