The Atkins Diet works short term for weight loss, but it is NOT a good, healthy way to eat. I did it several years ago and it made me feel unwell eventually. It can be very damaging to the body. Endo Diet focuses on eliminating foods that cause inflammation within the body.

I started on the paleo diet in 2007 after experiencing all sorts of horrible digestive issues and fatigue that were unrelenting and seemed had no identifiable cause. Eventually, an NP suggested I might have Celiac or gluten intolerance so I went gluten free and felt noticeably better within 6 weeks. I got interested in nutrition and learned all about paleo (back then called "the caveman diet") and it really resonated with me. I went strict paleo and my digestive issues were reduced by about 80%. Amazing results! In the last few years, I started doing a lot of cycling (previously I only did more anaerobic sports). I found that I just couldn't keep up with my colleagues without adding additional starch to my diet. That's when I discovered the Perfect Health Diet (I know, it's a cheesy name . It's basically paleo with the addition of "safe starches" which are potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams, rice, and other roots and tubers. Switching to Perfect Health has definitely helped my cycling performance and I'm still largely free of digestive issues. The only exception is during my period, when I still have horrible upper left intestinal pain. But my OBGYN is telling me that is probably endo-related rather than diet-related... Check out the PHD: perfecthealthdiet.com/

Brussie - TPH Diet looks really good! It's very similar to the Primal Blueprint Diet. That's awesome that you had good results with it!

Brussie, what is that pain in the upper left abdominal area? It's been killing me at ovulation and my period for the last couple months, and I don't even know what is UP there! and Jenaya, don't beans have carbs in them? some more than others...I don't know. Clearly as a vegetarian, I won't be paleo any time soon .

I read that you can't have beans on the paleo diet?? Is that true??? There are lots of versions of Paleo - some more strict, some less strict. Beans, like grains (and nuts, too) have anti-nutrients. Seeds don't want to be eaten so they are equipped with special chemicals that screw up our digestion. In beans, I believe they are Phytates which hamper the absorption of minerals in our gut. I think they bind to insulin receptors, too, but I can't remember if that is right. Indigenous cultures that eat beans regularly prepare them by soaking them before cooking. That decreases the amount of phytates. So beans are ok if you soak them. That's the main reason they are not considered part of the paleo diet but, also, for people that are trying to lose considerable weight, the carbs factor in. I personally don't eat them because I prefer nuts and the added preparation makes them not worth it to me. I like other, easier foods, better.

Jaye - do you have any suggestions for paleo recipes? I've been struggling to find a good cookbook that avoids most of the foods I can't have or are loaded with processed ingredients, and it just dawned on me that I'm basically eating along the lines of the paleo diet anyway, so why not look for a paleo cookbook? Any tips? I stumbled across this on pinterest but can't really view it to see if it's any good; paleorecipebook.com/i1.html Any suggestions?

Nevermind - I'm going to start here with their book: whole9life.com/start/ Seems like a sensible start, but if you have any other cookbook ideas, I'd love to hear them!

Hey Karen!
I haven't heard of that book. I don't actually own any paleo recipe books because there are so many good ones online. I just search with "paleo" and the ingredient I want to use and always get good results.
However, I have heard really good comments about a book called paleo comfort food. These were unsolicited comments on a paleo forum I frequent. If I hear of others, I will post here.
