Hi all, just come back after seeing my gynea cos been in hospital and thought endo must be back . Gynea said she can see the endo though i could try some tablets first rather than have another lap so soon which i thought sounded good, if it doesn't work after three months i will have to have the surgery. Anyhow , it claims in the leaflet that it may shrink or make the endo completely disappear and wondered if anyone has tried it? If so any side effects and was you taking the pill too etc?
Love, Nicola xx

Hi, ncolaxx. Hormonal treatment will shrink the endometriosis; however, it always comes back after the treatment is stopped. Also, if the pill has a progestin (synthetic progesterone), it will cause drying out/dying of cervical crypt cells which secrete lubrication. 3 months of birth control pills ages the cervix by 1 year. Here is a link to a study by the foremost expert on cervical mucus... sounds dumb, but thought I'd let you know. www.billings-ovulation-method.org.au/act/cervix/ageing.shtml Other side effects I had were with a really strong progestin...cysts on my scalp...OUCH!

Howdy! Provera is similar to Prometrium in what it does (although Provera is synthetic, while Prometrium is the natural one). Here is a blurb from another thread we have on Provera and how it works. copy/paste Here. I found a link about Provera to bring on a period. It's from a university medical website. www.utmb.edu/whcg/gynecology/medroxyprog.htmHere is also from Pfizer's .pdf of the proscribing information for Provera---NOT Depo Provera. "Provera brand of medroxyprogesterone acetate tablets INDICATIONS AND USAGE PROVERA Tablets are indicated for secondary amenorrhea and for abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance in the absence of organic pathology, such as fibroids or uterine cancer. PROVERA Tablets are also indicated to reduce the incidence of endometrial hyperplasia in nonhysterectomized postmenopausal women receiving 0.625 mg conjugated estrogen. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION Secondary Amenorrhea—PROVERA Tablets may be given in dosages of 5 or 10 mg daily for 5 to 10 days. A dose for inducing an optimum secretory transformation of an endometrium that has been adequately primed with either endogenous or exogenous estrogen is 10 mg of PROVERA daily for 10 days. In cases of secondary amenorrhea, therapy may be started at any time. Progestin withdrawal bleeding usually occurs within three to seven days after discontinuing PROVERA therapy. Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Due to Hormonal Imbalance in the Absence of Organic Pathology— Beginning on the calculated 16th or 21st day of the menstrual cycle, 5 or 10 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate may be given daily for 5 to 10 days. To produce an optimum secretory transformation of an endometrium that has been adequately primed with either endogenous or exogenous estrogen, 10 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate daily for 10 days beginning on the 16th day of the cycle is suggested. Progestin withdrawal bleeding usually occurs within three to seven days after discontinuing therapy with PROVERA. Patients with a past history of recurrent episodes of abnormal uterine bleeding may benefit from planned menstrual cycling with PROVERA. Okay. So, yah. it works like the pill. When you quit taking it, you have a "withdrawl bleed." Sounds like he's going to have you use it much like the b.c. pill to hopefully stop your bleeding. In anovulatory women, it's used to bring on the "period"--actually withdrawl bleed so they can hopefully go on to an ovulatory cycle. Make sense?

Hey ladies. I've done a few searches on the forum for Provera, but only really found some posts on Depo Provera which is the injection. Does anybody have any experience with the tablet form? I'm on 10 mg twice daily for 6 months to 'kill off' the rest of the endo. We shall see. I haven't noticed any negative side effects yet, but I'll use this thread if I do get any. I just spotted that uncomfortable is on it too?
All I can say up to now is that I had a slight murky smudgy bleed after about 10 days, but this is also 10 days after lap and insertion of Mirena so I don't know if it's connected at all. I started it during my period, so I'll let y'all know if I get another bleed. Anyone with any info, I'd be much obliged.

Hey Atherhel, Yeah, I just started Taking Provera tablets about 16 days ago. I am on 5mg/ once a day. I haven't had my diagnostic lap yet (scheduled for feb) but I am taking it as a stronger alternative to a progesterone pill. I was on Micronor for about 6 months, and it was working well for me, until I started getting breakthrough bleeding. I was bleeding every 14 days, for 8 days straight. although my pain was slightly diminished on it, I was bleeding so often that I was still getting more then enough pain. So I decided to go off, and tough out the pain as best as I could until my lap. But I think I have an extreme sensitivity to estrogen, or some other combination of imbalance happening. Because I tend to have a lot of issues with nausea, and before I started taking the Micronor, I had morning nausea every single day, generally lasting until midday. When I started Micronor, it magically cleared up (still the odd morning, but it became much less frequent) So when I went off Micronor, my nausea came back, only this time much stronger then before, which I think had a lot to do with that fact my body was probably barely producing its own supply of progesterone since being given a drug replacement of it. So after about 2 weeks of pure torture (and meltdowns) I finally gave in, and I am now on Provera. I'm disgusted I have caved in to more drugs, but for the time being I needed a quick fix. I have no idea what I am going to do when the 6 months are up though. I can't stay on this forever. So far I find it really helpful for my nausea, but the first 3 days I was on it I was so tired out I felt drugged, and barely left bed. I have more of an appetite on it (which for me is really excellent) The only negative side effects I have noticed is that I'm slightly moodier/more on edge with it. But I think that has a lot to do with the fact that I feel very tired on Provera, and want more sleep all the time, so towards the end of the day I get a bit grumpier. I will let you know if I notice anything else while on it.
You are on both Mirena and Provera? What was your doctor's thinking on that? (if you don't mind me asking) I thought they both had the same effects.

Well my doc recommended Mireana at the consultation, to help the heavy periods. After the lap and the discovery of the endo, he couldn't get it all so has given me Provera - dose enough to stop cycle and hopefully kill off the rest. Double whammy I suppose, get it from all angles! Lol. I haven't noticed any side effects so far with Provera. I do find it hard to get out of bed and I'm sleeping a lot, but I've been like that for months, and having hadd two weeks off work over xmas I guess my body clock's a bit skewed. Back to work tomorrow, I start at 7.30 am so I have to get up at stupid o'clock, I'm hoping it won't be too much of a struggle now. My moods seem to be calming down. Yesterday and today I feel more content and serene and not irritated than I have in months. We'll see how long that lasts though........keep me posted on how you get on with it?

I think I've been getting mild hot flashes, but I'm not sure. I had it the whole first week I started taking Provera, and it kinda calmed down for a week or so, now it seems to be back. Mostly at nighttime, just after I take it, I seem to feel really warm around my head, and get a prickly sweaty feeling on my face. and all around feel gross. No idea what this is, but I am certain I've never had this before Provera.

I've had them on and off for a long time anyway, so I wouldn't know whether Provera is having that affect on me or not. I've just recently hit what 'should' be mid cycle, and I've been so hormonal/emotional it's unreal. Last weekend I was calm and serene as you like, back to work and I'm a wreck again.

I think these things are actually increasing my appetite, as I've been lead to believe they do. However, I think it's a good thing because I'm actually getting off my backside and making meals from scratch again. have had silly amount of veg today. Before, my appetite was bad and I was just eating rubbish. Will be keeping a close eye on my weight though!

I agree, I think they do too! For me its an exceptionally good thing though as before I was so nauseous I was barely eating enough to sustain myself. I was grossly underweight. I still am underweight, but at least I am eating WAY better now, and I don't feel quite as drained as a result. I have been eating everything I can tolerate though, which isn't necessarily good, because I have been ignoring food groups for a few weeks. Time to get back on track a bit.

I think these things are turning me into a quivering wreck. I can barely stop crying. I can't think about anything emotive or have a discussion about anything emotive without welling up. I did used to get a little bit like this occasionally before I started taking them, but not for this length of time. 5 more months of it.......
Uncomfortable it's very very important for you to nourish your body as best you can with a balanced diet - please don't ignore the good food groups!

Atherhel, the extra emotion might be caused by the combination of both Provera and Mirena. I am sure one of them on its own is enough to cause some changes, both together is probably not helping any. The main thing I have noticed is just being really short with everyone. I feel irritated by pretty much everything. And you are on 4 times the dose that I am for Provera, plus Mirena on top of it all. I imagine it is not pleasant at all.
As for the food groups, yes I agree its not good to ignore the good ones. I have been mainly just eating a lot more of everything, good groups included. I just haven't been paying too much attention to how balanced the intake of the good groups are. (how many slices of bread, how many fruits, etc..)

I was on provera to help to stop my bleeding when my iron was so low and I could not take the iron infusions. Here is what I know of it my doc would only give it to me for at the most 10 days. That was it he said it is not a drug that you stay on for long periods of time. Now all my docs are aware of my great sensitivity to drugs. Maybe that is why my dose was given for a shorter time period then the rest of you however he never said that it was because of me he said the drug was not for use for long periods of time. I would discuss it with your doctor and let him know how you feel
