This is B.S.!!!! Where I live, it is popular for women, mainly mid 20-somethings, single, to buy a dog and treat it as a baby. Sadly, these women bring the dogs everywhere, whether it be in a tiny purse or in a buggy! What is REALLY WRONG is when these women bring the dogs into a grocery store and let them ride in the cart, smearing their butts allllll over where we put our food and let our babies ride! My husband contacted the main office after making complaint after complaint each time he shops and sees numerous dogs in shopping carts. He just received word back today that "Manager was informed that all non-service dogs are to be removed from facility. Please be advised, anyone claiming their animal is a “service” pet, does not have to provide proof of that designation." Comeon! Why should even a service pet be allowed to get feces in a grocery store shopping cart?!? Surely, a miniature foo-foo dog dressed in a ballerina costume, called "Baby" shouldn't qualify as a guide dog! I'm all for REAL guide dogs for all types of reason, including autism, but come on!!!! A purse dog w/ rhinestones and dyed hair? Sheesh! I think the health department should be contacted!

I think the health department should be called to round up all the kooks! It's so unfair to the dog, yes they are small and cute and have sweet sides to their personality but why treat a dog like the baby you couldn't be bothered having? Closest I get to being that nuts is buying nice collars for my cats, and guess what they wreck them anyway so they don't give a crap about 'looking pretty' so imagine how those poor dogs feel! Completely disgusting though definitely, esp as these dogs have their natural behaviour suppressed with all this babying, who knows when it's bum was last cleaned?! xx

It's also unfair to those shoppers who are babies, elderly, or those with otherwise compromised immune systems. Definitely think I'll be writing the health department!

Geez, that would NEVER happen where I live! The worst I ever saw was an old lady who came out of a tore and pulled a little dog out of her shirt. Apparently she was hiding him the whole time! Anyway it's stupid that they would just believe any dog was a service animal. It's pretty obvious when a dog is a guide dog! For one thing, guide dogs don't ride in carts!

And I also think that the ADA (disability organization) would take offense and be appalled at people doing that w/ these little dogs and getting by on the "service animal" exemption! Maybe I should write to them?

That's what I was going to say! Write to them, maybe they can lobby the store to change the policy!

Hey, you might as well write to everyone you can think of. If it got on the news that would definitely change things, because it would be bad publicty for the store!

You know -- most health codes forbid any animals except service animals from being anywhere that food is sold. You can't always recognize a service animal -- but most of them don't ride in carts or in little purses! However -- it is up to the store to enforce it, and if they don't, you hafta wonder what other health codes they are flagrantly violating! Seriously -- I would never return to that grocery store!
I live in Denver and dogs go about everywhere here -- with the exception of grocery stores, restaurants or other stores where food/grocery are sold. I have taken my dogs to Petsmart and Home Depot and not in a little purse. This trains them to deal with completely new and different situations and people. It is helpful for their agility & obedience training, as well as socialization as I am working with them to become hospice dogs. But again -- they don't wear rhinestone collars or ride in the carts! Again -- change grocery stores -- I'm sure there are mucher bigger and grosser problems that you CAN'T see!

Yah. Unfortunately, that message came from the actual health department here! I thought it came from the district manager of the grocery store chain! It's nuts!
