I was just prescribed a drug called NAPROXEN. I was wondering if anyone else has taken this and how it worked? I know it's a muscle relaxer but my doc thought it might help seeing as how my endo lession/tumor/ implant is in my abdominal muscle. I would appriciate any comments about these meds.

Naproxen sodium is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. You can get it over-the-counter as Aleve (In the US at least). I have had it prescribed to me and have also been told to just get Aleve and take 2 1/2 pills every six hours for cramps (2 1/2 Aleve pills is the equivalent to one of the prescription pills). I always take it when I'm on my period. It helps with the cramps, but not a huge amount. I'm careful to ween myself off of it slowly as the cramps subside because if I stop taking it all at once I get a huge headache. I'm also careful not to take more than I need as it is bad for your liver. It's related to aspirin so you can't take aspirin, ibuprofen, etc at the same time that you are taking naproxen, but you can take acetamenaphen or however you spell it. It's really just a pain reliever though, it doesn't help at all with healing the disease itself. It's the main thing I've been using to treat cramps for the past 10 years.

For the past few months I was taking motrin/advil all month long in an attempt to avoid the pain it never really worked but this month it was so bad I could barely move ( never new I used my stomach muscles that much). So I called my doc and she prescribed apo-naproxen 500mg to see if it helped a bit more, I'm guessing it's a bit stronger. I dont find it does anything other then make my stomach upset so I figured I'd ask if anyone else took it and if it helped. I had a referal made to see a obgyn in March and I'm still waiting for them to contact me for an appt. becasue I want a hysterectomy and this tumor/lesion thing removed or at least somthing to be done. Thanks for responding erzulie.

I find that Ibuprofen/Motrin/Advil doesn't help me at all, so you are likely going to get better results with the naproxen. It will upset your stomach if you're not careful though. You absolutely must eat soemthing right before you take it. I've also started taking medicine to reduce stomach acid while I'm on my period since I have to take so much naproxen then. That keeps me from getting an ulcer.

I also take Aleve. It's over the counter, not the prescribed apo-naproxen that you have. Do you know what the apo- part does?
Asprin doesn't work for me, but Ibuprofen does. But the naproxen sodium works the best for me. I can take one over the counter pill and it can last most of, and sometimes all day.
Because of the damage it might do, I only take it when I need to sleep, or to peform well on a particular occasion.

I've been taking Naproxin for over 6 years now. It is the only thing that reduces the pain. I would suggest taking a few pills a few days BEFORE you get your period as well. This helps with the pain (if your pain is unmanagable during your period). Mine are so bad that I start about 3 days before my period and take one or so a day. If I miss these days,,,, I regret it. I also usually have to take one or 2 when I ovulate as the pain is pretty strong. Lynette (Ann)

I came home as of yesterday with perscription for naproxen. So far I took one pill last night to get some sleep and I took one when I got up this morning (almost 4 hours ago) and I still haven't found any changes in my pain. I'm not taking it for period cramps exclusively.. more for the abdomenal/back pain that I have constantly. Maybe this isn't the stuff for me? Its the 500mg dose. My Pharmacist warned that this is 'really strong' but I'm supposed to take 2 a day. Is this one of those things you have to take a couple time to really see the improvement???

Hi I been prescribed naproxen for cramps and it did nothing for me, but i also took it for inflammation in my wrist caused by tendonistis and it helped. I don't get it. I'm not quite sure but maybe the drug has to build up in your system before you will notice any difference. Best of luck.

I've been told that you have to start taking the Naproxen before your cramps start to come on for it to have peak effectiveness. When you know you're starting your period or feel that "dull ache" or whatever your symptom is that lets you know that you are going to start, that's when you start taking them. I've tried to take Naproxen after the pain is really bad and it did nothing for me; however, if I manage to take the Naproxen before my period starts, then it does wonders. ...Just my experience and how I was told to take it by several docs.

Hi Ouchy! Thanks for your reply! As it turns out, your right. I got ahold of my pharmacist and she said that since its an anti inflammitory it may take a few days for the inflimation to go down before I notice any relief. She said that for the next few days I can take tylenol with it. Since my pain has been constant, I had no choice but to start in the middle of it. Now I wish there was something I could take to sleep...

BINGO!!!!!!!! I found some info for you Angelas, I hope this helps.
I found a print out sheet that my pharmacy gave me the last time I had a naproxen 500mg. This is some of info that I found.
Naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and swelling (inflammation). It is also used to treat headaches, muscle aches, backaches, tendonitis, Bursitis, dental pain, menstrual cramps, arthritis, or gout. The medication works by blocking the enzyme in your body that prostaglandins. By decreasing protaglandins it helps reduce pain, swelling, and fever.
I also found that in certain conditions for an example arthritis, it may take up to 2 weeks, taken regularly for people to notice any relief.
It might help to contact a pharmacist to see if it will take awhile for the naproxen to help with menstrual cramps.
Also my pharmacies always give out info sheets on prescriptions. If yours doesn't ask for one they can really help.
I hope this helps you and I have more info such as side effects etc, if you interested let me know.

I used to take in the beginning and it worked with little side effects. But now my pain has progressed I take Darvocet and sometimes Ultram.
It is just a strong does of Aleeve. I think if you keep taking it 2x's a day it help keep inflammtion down.

Like other NSAIDS, Naproxen/Aleve can cause stomach bleeding.

I have had naproxen and it upset my stomach within 20 mins plus didn't work, so out of the NSAIDs I've tried I'd say be careful as none of the others besides arcoxia (atorcoxib) upset my tummy at all xx
