Hey ladies - felt it was about time I let everyone know I quit smoking 3.5 months ago and it really hasn't been too difficult. I quite a couple of days after my 35th birthday. It was pretty much 20 years to the day that I became a smoker (due to a boy I was crazy about ). Also with health and financial issues going on, it all fell into place and I was raring to go. I've used a local smoking cessation service and patches. 2 tiny minor blips in the whole time, which I've forgiven myself for as there's 20 years of habit and addiction to break, but I know I'll never be a smoker again. I've tried to quit dozens and dozens of times but never managed more than 3 weeks before now. It's over, job done. Please can I not have 'Keep it up' comments as it's not a case of keeping it up, I'm a non smoker now!

Been over four months now. I've had a really bad few days at work this week, and I have to admit that in some ways I'm missing my 'little comfort' (which in truth I know it isn't) cos I feel so bad. Although when the sh1t first hit the fan I didn't even think about smoking. I have no intention of picking it up again, none at all, it's just bugging me that I even remotely want one of the filthy things!

You've done brilliantly, just think of it as a learned reflex from past behaviour and try not to feel too bad that you want one. I feel like I want one of those filthy things too... but having someone to go to the cinema and restaurants with is not an excuse for wanting a new boyfriend.

I'm still so stinkin' proud of you, Helen! It doesn't matter if you have a thought or two on occasion because I know you won't even think to go through with it!

i recently talked to my GP doc, about quitting. Told her having laparotomy, trying to get as healthy as possible before the surgery, asked about quitting smoking now (totally stressed out) or after, she said it would be hard to quit right now with stress, and basically gave me permission to quit after my surgery... Not sure how I feel about that, but nice to have a few weeks to plan out how I'm going to not smoke anymore after August 20th! I figure, I'll be in hosp a few days (the hardest few I hope) and then just basically be in lots of pain for a few more.... so my quit date ladies is AUGUST 20, 2010!!! will update after. wish me luck!

Ooh, how exciting! Well, I'm sure it'll be kind of stressful, but nice to have a date for the beginning of the end, isn't it? Think of it as a divorce from cigs!

Nice one! Not that I want to put you off or make you question your decision (well, date) but I really wanted to not be smoking before and after my lap last December, for the anaesthetic and because you can take longer to heal as a smoker. I used patches for around 10 days before my lap. Even if you use them on and off to try and reduce how much you smoke before, it could help a lot. I'm right there with you though, whatever you decide. I know how hard it is. One of the drivers for me this time round was health. Well, it always has been but this time it was even more important. How can I keep moaning about feeling crap if I don't change one of the biggest health risks? It sounds to me like you're preparing yourself well, but I would give some thought to trying patches for a few days before and after your op. Good luck xx

I just thought I would chime in here and say that I have been quit now for 52 days with the help of patches. I had smoked a pack a day for 12 years. I have even had a few days that I forgot to put on the patch and didn't even think about it. It seemed so weird going into a restaurant and having them ask smoking or non-smoking and answering with "non-smoking please!!!" So hellsbells I know how hard it is and wish you the best of luck.
