Hey, does anyone have any information about non-functioning ovaries? I'm not even sure of the techincal term, but I do think that I only ovulate from my left side. If anyone has any insight, it I would so grateful. Thanks.

There is an estrogen test that can be done to find out if both of ovaries have expired, basically if you are approaching menopause. If you are curious as to whether or not you only ovulate from one ovary, you'd probably have to have ultrasounds done for a couple months to see if the follicles only grow from one ovary. I think that's really the only way to know, unless, of course, you've had one ovary removed.

...I'm curious. Why do you think you only ovulate from one ovary (assuming you still have both)? I have a friend who also thought she only ovulated from one ovary, bc she said that she only had "ovulation pain" on one side. After a couple of ultrasounds for fertility reasons, it was clear that both ovaries were popping out eggs, and her pain was actually something else.

I don't know if this helps, but my surgeon said that having one ovary (either one functioning or if one is removed) does not decrease fecundability (?). She said that a lot of women only produce eggs on one side. She said that it's a pretty common misconception for women to think that they ovulate from one ovary one month, and the other ovary the next month.

actually ouchy....im assuming this for the same reason really. i finally came off the bc for a break...my first period was bareable...im now ovulating and am getting horrible pains on my left side (which is my 'bad side'). ive always had issues with just my left ovary, never my right, which just makes me wonder.
i also get cysts a lot when i am off the bc so i am wondering if that could be the issue as well. its just been my whole like with pain on my left...im not sure what else it could be besides a cyst?

Oh wow. Do you have PCOS, too (Sorry if you have already posted this somewhere.) ?
Also, one member, Janet (vatechgrad), has pain w/ ovulation on one side--her ovary is stuck to her colon w/ endo...EEEEK!!!
I've had cysts on my ovaries before, so I know how painful ovarian cysts can be (as in PCOS).
I also had horrible one-sided pain that I thought was my ovary totally messed up w/ endo, but it wound up actually being my sigmoid colon covered in endo. Everything is so compact down there, sometimes it is difficult to tell what organs are actually affected by just the pain.
Hope your pain goes away, though!!!!

I've been wondering about my colon now! After reading all of everyones posts, I'm sorta curious to know if my colon is okay! haha. Sometimes a different pain comes when...well, I have to, hmmm... go. Lol. But, that's not all the time. It's in the same exact spot I get pain with my periods and ovulation, but not the same pain.
And, I've heard of PCOs, but I have never been diagnosed. Infact, no Dr has even mentioned it to me. Before I was diagnosed with endo I had a HUGE ruptured cyst that landed me in the hospital a night, and about 6 months later I had another. I had a lap, got endo, drs put me on bcs, and that was that. Last year I forgot to get my 'script filled for my pills and skipped a month, well...I went to the dr with my left side pain thinking it was a cyst. It was...a small one, regular size...like the normal cysts women get with their period. But the weird thing? I had one on each ovary! The cyst on my left was just slightly larger than the one on my right. So weird....

Women usually get cysts each month with ovulation, not periods.
If it is something you're concerned about, you can have an LH/FSH hormone test done on cycle day 3 (day you start your period=cycle day 1). LH:FSH is supposed to be about 1:1. If LH is higher than FSH, that is a good indicator of PCOS--other than having polycysts or large cysts.

I meant ovulation. But they do eventually go away...
There is a difference though between a PCOs cyst and ovulation cyst?
