Hello there, I was wondering about how endo affects ones periods? i've read that it can make ones period very heavy, and mine were growing up, but my last two have been very light...and as normal interuppted, however the most recent one was very interuppted as in spotting, nothing, start, nothing, start again...nothing. Am i making sense? it has breaks from hours to a day or two. Is this a normal thing?

People with endometriosis often have irregular periods, and they're usually heavy. I haven't heard of the stopping and starting before though; that sounds more like something that would happen with adenomyosis, since usually the blood has a hard time working its way out with that disease.

Hi, Lauren. I've had that happen, too. It happened more when I was younger, though. I remember that in 6th grade, I was happy one time that my period only lasted 3 days, so I quit wearing a pad. Well, the next day...surprise!!!! my period was back, heavier than ever.
My doc. also suspects that I have adenomyosis, which is basically endometriosis of the uterine muscle. Adenomyosis is very common with endometriosis; in fact, some studies show about 90% of women with endometriosis who undergo removal of the uterus show adenomyosis when the pathology report on the uterus comes back. My doc. says that this statistic is commensurate with his patients who undergo hysterectomy for endometriosis who also have adenomyosis come back on their path reports.

I'm the same.
I could start my period for a day then stop for 2-3 hours then start again. It goes on and off maybe 5 times during one period.

I'm sorry, I guess I've never experienced this, but I'm curious.
How can you tell when your period stops for only a couple of hours? Isn't the blood still flowing? If it's a matter of the pain level, doesn't the pain start and stop throughout the period anyway?

Hi, Meka. With mine, I would see on my panties the sign that I had started. I would put on a pad and then a day or two could go by without any spotting or any other signs. Then, out of the blue, I would start again. I also had occasion to have a heavy flow day, change my pad, then several hours later go to change it again, and there would be nothing on it. Take it off, thinking by through some divine intervention, my period had somehow stopped for that cycle, only to find out later that evening that my flow was back! It was very confusing. I finally just started wearing a pad from the moment I saw the first sign to wearing panty liners for 3 days after I saw the last sign, just as a precaution.

I have never experienced heavy bleeding. It is a common symptom of endometriosis but not everyone has heavy bleeding. I have light bleeding, then I spot off and on for a few days and thats it. Now the pain and uterine contractions are HORRID, but little to no bleeding.

I see.
Mine, growing up, have been very consistent up. The cycle would be 28/29 days. The bleeding would be medium in the beginning to light after about 3 days. Now the bleeding is semi-heavy ("semi" because it 's nothing compared to what some of the women here have said about theirs) to light by the third day. Also, I know that it's about to start a day or two in advance because, 1) my calendar tells me, 2) the vaginal fluid gets a little brown. Then, the day before it starts I get dull, uncomfortable (but not yet "painful") cramps, and leg and back pain. The pain levels usually cycle from very high, to medium every 3 months. So far, I've pretty much known what to expect. (Except for the other endo pain that comes after the period ends.) Fortunately, I haven't had mid-cycle spotting, or on-off-on periods. I am sorry that so many of you have such inconsistency on top of the endo-pain. It can really wear on the spirit.
