Bentyl?

I have a friend who has terrible periods, though has never been diagnosed with endo. The last time she went to the ER she was given Bentyl, which is a drug used for IBS. She said it has worked miracles. Anyone else heard of this?

Nope. Never heard of it. I have heard of Hyoscyamine (sp?) for IBS, though. Oh, and Zelnorm for constipation predominant IBS.

I didn't think it made much sense either but I plan on asking my doctor about it in a few weeks when I go in for a physical. I don't see how IBS medication would help with endo unless it was on the bowel?! My girlfriend says her cramps are gone! Anyway, I will ask the doc and post what I find out, if anything...

I took hyoscyamine (spelling?) for "IBS" that would only happen during my periods (and I DO have endo on my bowels). Since so many docs. mistake endo as IBS, it makes sense that a lot of women are prescribed IBS medication. I guess it helped me a bit, but definitely not as much as having the actual endo removed and my intestines freed-up!

So my doc told me yesterday that Bentyl is just a muscle relaxer, an old one, in fact. She said I would become impaired by it, and since that is not the kind of solution I am looking for, she did not prescribe it. Just following up to my own question.

I really love this class of drugs. I take something similar dicyclomine, 2 tabs in the morning. I have seen a huge improvement in the abdominal cramping, urgency, and consistency of my bowel movements. It actually gives me more freedom with my life. Love it, love it, love it.

I guess this was an older thread, but I'm kind of glad it was renewed. I have had IBS problems and Bentyl (dicyclomine) was one of the most effective medicines I have been prescribed. My understanding is that it is a muscle relaxer but that is works specifically on the muscles of the intestines. I want to say that I noticed incidentally that it seemed to help my cramps.
I don't know if this happens to anyone else, but Bentyl makes me feel really weird - sort of loopy in a hard-to-describe way. It feels almost like I'm always at that moment on a roller coaster when you first start dropping from the highest point. It seems to let up a bit if I take it continuously, but I usually only take it as needed for shorter periods. My my takes it too, and she says it makes her feel the same way.

I was also prescribed something called Librax once, which is apparently composed of two drugs - one is a benzodiazepine, which is a sedative and muscle relaxer, and the other is something else (can't recall). I had a horrible allergic reaction to it and had to go to the emergency room because my nose and throat started to close up pretty rapidly. Prett scary. Apparently I'm allergic to the "something else" part, not the benzodiazepine .

that "loopy" feeling is a very common side affect, Bentyl causes bad heart palpitations which is what makes that dropping sensation sometimes.

dicyclomine is just generic for bentyl, I was prescribed that at the ER too (for "IBS" which turned out to be endo.. ha..) and i feel a little funky when I take it also! Oddly thought, it doesn't seem to help me much. Glad it works for all you others!

Bentyl in my experience really didn't do much for me except make me sleep for 12hrs a day. I've heard from people who have had great success with it, but it definitely wasn't for me.
