Hi there
I've posted before about breakthrough bleeding - have been bleeding constantly since starting pill 4 weeks ago ( although actually today is the last day of my 'break' and i've actually not bled today. I'm assuming I will start again when I begin my new packet tomorrow? Anyway, I was just wondering whether the pill is still effective as contraception if I am having this constant breakthrough? Am worried it's not working properly and don't want to get caught out.
many thanks for any replies
Julie

Hi, Jooz. From what I know if you are having continual breakthrough, it usually means there is not enough estrogen in the pill for you. The doctor can give you another pill with more estrogen or give you oestrogen pills to take for a few days. In my case, on my last pill (pill brand #10 also w/ breakthrough) the gynecologist just had me double-up on the pills (thereby increasing the estrogen) until the breakthrough stopped.
Also, my gynecologist told me that breakthrough isn't a real period, and neither is a "withdrawl" bleed/week off. Supposedly, even though you are having breakthrough and getting a "fake period," this does not mean that you are ovulating. I've read a lot to support this, also, but also some reports to contradict it.
If you chart your temperatures, you can find out whether or not you are ovulating and whether or not the the pill is working as far as contraception. Conversely, you can go for ultrasounds to see if you have any follicles (eggs maturing) building up.
