Has anyone heard of kava?? (Disclaimer - this is not a recommendation - consider it a discussion) A few yrs ago I went to a Fijian Indian wedding where I was offered kava. I didn't have very much because I didn't know much about it. Everyone else was enjoying it. It seemed kind of similar to alcohol, but the drink is prepared from the root of a plant. It got me curious because I like natural things and I was assured it was perfectly legal. It's non-addictive and doesn't give you a hangover. I have since wondered whether it would be any good for pain relief. Has anyone heard of it? Does anyone know much about it? I googled it and found that it is a muscle relaxant that makes you feel happy and peaceful and ready for a good sleep. But it is no good for you if you drink too much of it, or particularly if the perparation is made from any part of the plant other than the root. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KavaI was given some and I have it in my cupboard; I have been too chicken to use it. What do you guys think??

I watched a doccumentary about the Bunlap tribe, and they drank Kava. They said it has narcotic properties, but that can't be. I think they were using "narcotic" in its Greek definition, meaning "to sleep." It has no relation to actual narcotics/opiates. My husband and I thought about growing poppies from seeds that you can buy off of ebay then decided against it. LOL Let us know if you try the Kava!

u know, its funny you mentioned that, coz i found out not all that long ago that my mum the naughty thing did drugs when she was preggers with me. She didnt know she was pregnant, coz she 'got her period', was on holidays, and it was part of the festivities, so she had some. From what ive heard its a fairly harmless drug, u could try it for pain relief. It did no harm to me in the womb, lol..........maybe If ur concerned, just make sure someone else is around when u try it, but i think its fairly safe as far as drugs go, u might find a small amount is enough to relieve pain without putting u into a drugged state. If someone else is around though, they can get u help if needed (not trying to frighten, unlikely ull need it, but for safety would say this about any drug). Interestingly, im not someone who uses drugs, but when i was in Amsterdam, i did think, when in Rome, and did have a dabble with pot, and interestingly, it did relieve my pain quite a bit, was a similar effect to the tramadol, and being so used to the effects of tramadol, it did not put me into a drugged state (which at the time was a little dissapointing, lol). Again not condoning, just discussing.

I have had so many friends ask 'why don't you just smoke pot'. There has been the long fight here in Canada about the legalization of it for medical use as a pain killer. I can't bring myself to do it though since I don't want to become a total stoner for good. But this Kava you talk about sounds interesting. I myself have never heard of it. It may be something that could work though. If you do try it let me know... I would be interested in finding out where I could get that here.

Its easily available in fiji, but i dont know if it will be easy to access anywhere else. Alot of people in Oz have tried it coz fiji is a common holiday destination, nice little prezzie to bring the kids , lol I know what u mean about the pot issue Angelas, i guess its probs like the use of methadone or morphine for pain relief, ur unlikely to get addicted coz its working on the pain. But it is an individual choice, id be reluctant to use it myself as a means of pain relief, but im reluctant with most analgesics, coz the ones that work well have side effects. Even my beloved tramadol doesnt completely rid the pain and it does effect my concentration levels, and a few times (although not many) have had mild hallucinations from it. Nothing serious, once felt like i had a big rash on my arms, and couldnt stop scratching, and the other was walking up a spiral staircase of all places the world started swaying like i was on a boat, and im not scared of heights. So yeah, gotta be wary with anything.

Maybe I will try the kava just to let you guys know what it's like If anyone is trying to get any, pls dont get it in like a vitamin form or anything, because it might be the dodgy kind that uses all parts of the plant... you would need to get it in the form that uses just the roots. The stuff I have in my cupboard is in like a rough powdery form.

Ha Angelas so true. I can say smoking dope is temping some days. I haven't given into it. God the last time I smoked pot was years ago. If I tried it again I would probably fall flat on my face. I agree with you also I don't want to walk around stoned all day. Though it would definitely make me job quite interesting lol.

I guess if the kava keeps the liver busy, it should be avoided for the same reason as alcohol.
