I am a married 43 year old mom of two boys (ages almost 16 and 18). I have been having some pelvic pain for a few months that seems to be getting worse. A few months ago, I had pain that felt like ovarian pain, but it was way past ovulation. It also moved around on that side. Next month I had more "ovulation like" pain on the other side. I was beginning to think I might have an ovarian cyst(s). Now it's the third month and I'm on day 4 of my period. The pain was back the week before my period, but moving all around. Literally, the pain would move from lower right, to lower left, to both at the same time, to upper right, to upper left...and all in the same day! Talk about weird!
I have a history of having long, heavy, painful periods, but thought that was normal. Not sure if it's related. Most of the time, my period is very heavy for two days, then slows a bit on the third, then picks up again on the 4th and sometimes 5th. It's not usually too much for the 6th and 7th days, but still there. The pain is always the worst on day 2, although lately day 1 and 3 haven't been too fun either. I have always had HORRENDOUS ovulation pain. I mean horrible, stabbing pain that I can hardly breathe through. It's been that way most of my life. I've always joked that I can tell exactly when I ovulate because the pain builds and builds until it finally starts to subside, although it stays sore for another day or so. As far as normalcy, I believe I am in perimenopause. My cycles used to be 35-37 days with ovulation occuring on day 18 or 19. Now they are 27-28 days (or this past month I started on day 23!) with ovulation happening on day 10-14). I have not skipped any periods yet or had two in one month.
I saw my gyno on Friday (one day before my period). She did an ultrasound in the office since I was complaining of pain around my ovaries. She didn't see anything on them (cysts, tumors), but said of course that endo cannot be seen without a lap. She did note that the lining to my uterus was thick for where I was in my cycle. She said that is often caused by not ovulating and not producing progesterone. So, it's too much estrogen, I guess.
So, here I am having this weird pelvic pains on and off now. I would describe them mostly as an ache, but sometimes a little sharp/stabbing. I don't know if I should wait until my period is over and see how it feels then. Is it common for endo pain to last all the way through a period? Also, aren't I kinda old for getting endo? Or maybe I've had it my whole life, but it never caused problems.
I have interstitial cystitis, which is a bladder disease. For the past 9 months, I've been in remission and I would hate to have them go in with a scope, and mess with my bladder! Is it possible to tell a doctor not to touch my bladder since it's feeling so good??
I really don't know what to think. What would the next step be? Would I get a CAT scan or MRI? Or do I go right for the lap? My doctor didn't say, but she did mention trying progesterone. I don't know if I could take bc pills because I have lots of migraines.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Jane
