I didn't a search but didn't find anything related specifically to finding something else to drink on cold blustery mornings. (If there is one... Can someone send me a link and I will ask there. We have so many of us on diet restrictions that I was hoping someone would have an idea. I LOVE coffee and I worked hard to get myself to drink decaf by buying several different ones until I found one I liked. With my IC diagnosis I have had to take even decaf off the list, as well as: [/b] (herbal, black, green - peppermint is okay for IC but not okay for my ulcers) Pop, any kind of soda, probably healthier for me anyways but just drinking water at the restaurant is not very much fun Juice of any kind - Juice isn't really healthy, not even 100% juice so this is probably better for me too Hot chocolate - if I'm not in a flare I can have hot cocoa but its risky as it can precipitate a flare and my gut can't handle it [/ul] So here is the list of things I have tried for coffee substitutes: [/b] - made from barley and other grains, its supposed to taste like coffee. Its not very good Malted Milk - it tasted like old cereal gone warm and mushy on the counter Heating up milk shake milk flavors to see what it tasted like, it tastes like a warm milk shake [/ul] Anyone have a suggestion of something that tastes good on a cold day? Or to order in a restaurant instead of pop/juice?

I'm not sure how much your IC diet correlates with the endo diet but the pero drink that's made from barely would have gluten in it. Barley has gluten in it along with some grains. Also anything "malted" has gluten in it too. I guess if gluten isn't a problem for you then it would be an OK substitute I guess. Are you able to drink hot apple cider? Also there are some herbal teas that can be quite good and caffeine free. You can get an herbal tea in just about any flavor and have it completely natural and free of nasty stuff. Camomile is awesome, peach tea, apple tea, there is even a pomegranate tea! Grocery stores have that little health section with all the organic stuff and usually has a big section of natural teas. They are really yummy.

For awhile I was taking Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan as a tea, three times a day, and it was a GREAT coffee substitute. It was prescribed by my acupuncturist, and I have no idea if it did anything to help the endo, the only thing i noticed was that it kept me very regular haha.
So far it's the only thing that's managed to keep me off of coffee for any length of time. It definitely doesn't taste "good"...but... kind of like crappy coffee? haha

I drink dandelion tea: www.dandyblend.com/about.asp It does have barley and rye in it. I've also tried some of those chicory coffee substitutes but they aren't as good. I like the dandy blend - it doesn't taste like coffee, but has the same "feel" to it. It's "thicker" than tea, has the consistency of coffee, so it has that same cozy feel. Also good is rooibos chai. That's warm and cozy also. Once in a while I drink a decaf coffee. There are some cafes here that make rooibos espresso, which is grinding the rooibos tea very fine and putting it through an espresso machine. I haven't tried this at home, but it has a "feel" of coffee too. They call it "red espresso." Not sure if they have this in WA state, where you live. Haven't seen it there (I often go to Bellingham and Seattle). I think I may try and grind some rooibos and see if I can make red espresso (only have a stovetop maker though).

No tea, can't have any tea because of the tannins. The only tea I can have is peppermint, which I can't have. I'll look into the other things that were suggested.

Rooibos has "low" tannins it says: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooibos I didn't even know it had tannins at all. Sorry! I assumed it didn't since it is an herbal "tea." not sure about the dandelion: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dandelion_coffee but I don't see tannins listed there. You can also use pure dandelion root, rather than the prepared dandy blend I mentioned above, but I have no idea what it tastes like. Would be curious to try that.

LOL I feel like I'm just ruining everything for you! But yes, wheat, barely, and rye have gluten in it. It's seriously in everything and i wouldn't be surprised if you have a problem with gluten.

Gluten isn't an issue had the blood test and everything and it was negative. Hot apple cider is of course juice and I can't have juice of any kind. I sent a quick note to the dandy blend to see if they will send me a sample. The pero was nasty and is similar sounding but i'm trying to be brave! It's pretty frustrating as you guys know restricting our diets but if you suggest it I will try it. Anyone else have some thoughts?

Can you do chamomile? Or even hot water with lemon (not sure if a dash of lemon would be too much for the IC)? I came across something called honeybush tea, but I'm not sure what that actually is. What about experimenting with some spices in hot water to see what you come up with?
