I hate that whatever is wrong with me causes so many issues with sleep! My back, my hips, my legs! It seems like no matter which way I try to position my self, I hurt. I was taking ibuprofen pm, but lately I have had a weird pain in my stomach after taking it so I stopped because I don't want to give myself an ulcer! I was smoking myself to sleep (cannabis) and it was working fabulously, but that was only temporary too (no contact here, it was just some good stuff I got while on vacation to see my sister, and she's 12 hrs away by car!) What helps? I'm so tired of being tired, amongst the other issues!

I sometimes take benedryl. I don't like to take medicine but so much, but when the pain keeps me awake, it's so hard to deal with during the day. So, on the worst days, I take benadryl before going to bed. I figure I'm always allergic to something, so it's probably useful too.

I have that problem too. Sometimes when I'm in a lot of pain I take a muscle relaxer to help me sleep. Most nights I just fall asleep with my heating pad wrapped around me.

Hot bath, followed by cold ice pack sometimes works... but the best trick is start slowing down earlier in the evening so your body has time to go "OUCH" and then by the time you get to bed things have relaxed enough to sleep. I find the absolute worst pain-that-makes-it-so-I-can't-sleep is when I run from dawn to dusk, crash in my bed and then expect my broken down body to instantly relax, stop hurting and go to sleep. Its not very nice of me to do that to the poor thing! Its definitely easier when I make myself put the homework down and wind down sooner in the evening. I know its brutal because there are only so many hours of the day and I swear I never have enough of them but it makes for a much less painful night and better sleep overall when I just stop sooner in the evening, get curled up on my couch or bed and lay flat for a while. The angry tight muscles can relax and the body can slowly work down to a dull roar of pain.

This may sound way out there, but when my pain was at its worst a few years ago, I bought a pain management CD. I know there's a thread out there somewhere but I couldn't find it. It's a sound track with a very calm woman talking gently about how you'll fall asleep soundly, you don't need to listen to your body's pain signals, you're calm, etc. For me, it at least took away that anxiety of 'Oh, no, I'm in so much pain, how am I ever going to sleep like this' and allowed me to calm down enough so that I could sleep soundly. Very seldom would I have to listen to it more than once for me to fall asleep. I wouldn't ever say that this pain is in our heads because I KNOW it's not, but calming our bodies down can help with the pain. Just my 2 cents, and there are no side effects from meds.
