Hi all!
Recently, my doctor recommended a diet for my PCOS called the 17-Day Diet. He said it was great to help with weight loss and insulin issues that tend to come with the PCOS. I mentioned to him that I'd been having severe energy crashes, with foggy thinking and terrible fatigue throughout the day, and that I'd not been able to lose ANY weight no matter how hard I tried. It's been so frustrating! So, instead of writing me a prescription for Metformin, he told me to go and pick up this book instead. I figured what the hey, I'd give it a go. So far so good! The first couple days were rough coming off sugar! I had severe detox symptoms, with headaches and fatigue. But the last couple I am beginning to see what energy really feels like again. I've been on it a week and the results are fantastic, down 8 lbs in 1 week! ;D This is the first time I've ever seen these kind of numbers, and I'm really encouraged! I know it's probably a lot of water weight, but it feels so good to step on the scales and see it!
Basically, the diet has three, 17-day cycles, with a more restrictive kick start. For the first cycle, you eat liberal amounts of proteins (turkey, chicken, fish) 2 servings of nonfat probiotic dairy (greek yogurt, cottage cheese), as many veggies as you want and fruit twice daily, with no grains at first. Throughout the diet, all fruits/carbs have to be eaten earlier in the day, atleast 8 hours before bedtime, so your body can have time to use them and they won't be stored as fat. I've read where some folks disagree with this method, but for me it makes sense and works.
Next, you gradually add back in some grains in the second cycle, and some breads in the third. With the grains added back in, you exercise more often and for longer, and the weight loss slows down to a more reasonable, healthy rate. The cycle method is supposed to keep you from hitting plateaus. If by the end of the cycles you still haven't lost all the weight you want to, you just start over with cycle 1 until you reach your goal.
I've done a lot of research on this diet. It was written by a family doctor who was tired of seeing so many of his patients killing themselves with food. There are several people that say it's just another fad, and that the cycles don't really have any scientific basis. You'll have to judge for yourself. All I know is, I feel so much better already, and it's only been a week. For the first time, I can almost get through a day without wanting to crawl in the bed. What I like most about this diet, is he has some recommendations for those folks who want to go more plant based with their diets, so it would work really well with the endo diet. And, although most of it is common sense, for me having a plan helps me be more disciplined. And, seeing results so quickly helps me stay motivated. Sorry to write a novel lol, but when I hear of something that may help, I always like to share! Here's hoping I can stay on the band wagon and be back in that two piece for summer!
