So I've been doing this allergy elimination diet. It really sucks, let me tell you. I can't have tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, corn, citrus fruits, peanuts, almonds, sugar (of any kind), chocolate, soy, artificial additives, wheat, caffeine, dairy, eggs, bananas, pineapples, asparagus, oysters, red meat or alcohol. I've been slowly adding things back in to "test" my reaction to them. Corn is fine, peanuts & almonds are fine, wheat is fine. I thought sugar was fine, but today I feel like crap.
Yesterday I drank 4 tsp. sugar in a glass of water. I had no reaction yesterday, but tonight I am bloated, lower abdominal pain, and I'm having "squishy" farts (gross I know, but at least nothing comes out). Three days before that I tested sugar using maple syrup. I literally drank about 1/3 cup of syrup. It was gross. It made me feel sick right afterwards, but I guess that's what happens when you eat too much sugar. I never did have that experience as a kid.
After the sick feeling went away, I was fine. So why does table sugar affect me and syrup doesn't? I know in the endo cookbook it says anything but table sugar and artificial sweeteners is okay, but does anyone know why? After I get over this crap feeling, I am going to test sugar one more time using honey.

What a cool experiment! After reading your first paragraph, though, I'm wondering what you ARE eating; there's not much left. I wonder about the sugar question, too. I wonder if it is the plant chemicals that are also in the maple syrup having a positive effect? I will be interested to hear how honey affects you.

Hi gaias, I'm pretty sure we already have at least one thread on the evils of sugar, more than likely in the diet/nutrition board. If I find it I'll post a link.

Did a little digging and couldn't find what I thought I would, so I'm opening this back up.
I think the little experiment you're doing to yourself is great, but I've heard that *sometimes* it can take a few days for food sensitivities to show up, and part of me is wondering if you're still feeling some of the effects of the maple syrup? Whatever the case, I hope the squishy farts have passed!
If it turns out that maple syrup is, indeed, ok and it IS the regular 'ol sugar, I wonder if it's maybe the processing? Or the molecular make-up of it? Or some sort of tie to candida? I'm grasping at straws. Have you made any headway yet?

The effects from the table sugar were just for that one day, thank goodness. I've been waiting three days in between testing since (according to my naturopath), effects can take 48 hours to show up. Last night I ate 3 spoonfuls of honey (WAY easier to get down than 1/3 cup of maple syrup!), and so far I feel fine. We'll see how I feel tonight and tomorrow, but I'm really hopeful that honey is okay. I think it must be the processing, because the syrup and honey I am using are both pure (one of the best things about Vermont is the abundance of pure foods), but of course the table sugar was Domino.

O and jaye, you're right. That was my first thought after going down the list: what the heck am I going to eat? It's been a LOT of rice, chicken, mushrooms and other vegetables. Occasionally fish, if I can find it without hormones.

This is a pretty fascinating experiment. I've known for a long time that I get sick from almost anything processed. It's a lot of work, but we've really gotten to a point where we make almost everything ourselves. A big step forward was picking up a bread machine on the side of the road in West Virginia, because it takes too long to make bread EVERY TIME. And a couple years ago, we got a pressure cooker (also in WVa--I swear, you can get anything there!), so we can make soups/sauces/etc in bulk and can them for later use--with no preservatives.
I'll be interested to know if part of what you're allergic to is the processing, gaiaspriestess!

There's also Keri's donut experiment thread, a thread on stevia, and a thread on maple syrup. I was sure we had one callled 'Sugar is evil' somewhere!

No worries, Helen. Rustmyrtle, I was thinking about getting a bread machine until I learned I'm not sensitive to gluten. We have a great local company up here that makes fresh bread. However... if I could use it for banana bread, I'd be all over it!
I'd be lying if I said honey had no effect on me. I've been having orangish, soft stool all day. However, it's nowhere near as bad as regular table sugar. That stuff just made me miserable. I can deal with honey.
