I hope this isn't a duplicate thread - I couldn't find anything under this topic or surgical topic when I searched.
Five weeks ago, I had a laparatomy (11" bikini cut) to remove Stage IV endo, bowel resectioning, appendectomy, cyst removal, etc. I had a laparascopic surgery in January as well. I go back to the doctor on Friday for my post-op visit and plan to ask this question but I am hoping for some real stories from other members. I want to start exercising again - I've been walking between 20 minutes to 1 hour a day (3 - 20 minute sessions, usually after meals) at a comfortable pace. However, I want to figure out exercises to help strengthen my abdominal and back muscles that don't do more damage. I had a very basic book from the hospital (that apparently they give everyone that has abdominal surgery) that explained scar massage and some easy exercises but I think I am ready to move beyond that. I am still bloated and sore but seeing improvement.
Any suggestions? Or absolutely do not do's?

I would be pretty careful about this and NOT EXERCISE MORE THAN THE DOC TELLS YOU! a laparotomy is a pretty serious surgery and recovery time is at least 2 months, from what I've heard! Please don't do too much!

I think you really need to let your body heal before you really push yourself. I made the mistake of trying a 1 (or was it 2?) two weeks after my lap with only three small incisions and my body let me know exactly how it felt about me doing that. I think I was back to Pilates about a month after, but it was very modified as I was still really sore. Although I agree you should be doing the suggested things from your doc, and am interested to hear more about the scar massage, but other than that, you really really really need to listen to your body. Are there some arm or leg exercises that you could do to appease you that don't really put some stress on your tummy? Is your wound healed up enough to go swimming yet? How about some yoga or pilates to gently move but won't be any harsh movements? Just some thoughts!
