Hi everyone- I searched for something on this topic and didn't find anything... Has anyone given consideration to growing your own organic vegetables??? We all know how ridiculously expensive organic veggies in the markets are. It's really easy, even if you live in an apartment! There are so many different types of planters now and pre-bagged organic soil that it makes it super easy. Even if you think you don't have a green thumb, I promise it's not too hard. Just make sure they get water and sunshine ;D Obviously during the winter months in most areas it's out of the question, but for at least half the year, think of how much you would save! Over the winter we had brocolli and spinach, and we just planted tomatoes, eggplant, summer squash, onions....Even if it's just a few things you use alot, it will help your bank account. Plus it tastes soooooo much better and you can't get it any fresher. You know what's going on it and where it came from. When I lived in an apartment during college I had a few tomato plants and some herbs and such in planters on the porch. It actually worked out very nice The minimal exercise and fresh air you get is also a plus. I dunno, just my thought for the day LOL!!!

I tried this a couple of years ago out on my deck. I only had about 4 pots of tomatos and peppers and it was really fun. Unfortunately, right when the veggies were ready to pick and I was so excited about eating them, somebody would come up to my deck and take a bite out of them! Those dang squirrels!

Unfortunately I would have trouble keeping my cats off the plants, they feel the need to chew on anything that's growing, even the roses I got for my birthday were under siege! And Lily, she likes to sit on the plants I was growing for my budgies crazy kitty I will try peppers and herbs definitely, we don't have much window space but it's worth a try!

Ohh, the peppers we had last year were soooo good. I had bells, banana, and jalepenos. Made some great salsa I hear ya about animal "pests". My horses got outta the paddock last year and ate all the corn stalks down to the ground. It was so depressing, LOL!!!!

Growing your own veggies is SO exciting! My boyfriend and i have started a small veggie garden in our back yard. Mostly we've got herbs (garlic chives, chillies, parsley, mint, sage, rosemaryt) which i use all the time, but we're now growing potatoes, pumpkins, carrots, spinach, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, capsicums, beetroot and beans. We've had one small crop of potatoes, lots of cherry tomatoes and the spinach is going well, everything else is still quite small, but i highly recommend growing anything because its an awesome feeling!! And youre right, the taste is just so much better.

Do you live in an apartment ouchy?
I honestly can't image life without a garden! Growing up we never had anything smaller than half acre, now that i've moved out on my own i think we still have about 1/4 or 1/3 of an acre- enough room to run around in!

It's great to see that you're all so enthousiastic about this. We're planning to move house at the end of the year, maybe beginning 09, to a house with an actual garden. Yippee! Can't wait to get cracking on growing some vegs and herbs as well! We do have a small balcony now but we're right next to one of the main entry/exit routes into the city ... ugh-fumes. We have a strawberry plant there which grows very well actually but even the birds don't eat these strawberries ha,ha! So I'm sticking to some herbs in the kitchen windowsill. I do get fruitflies easily though on these plants. Any tips to avoid these?

It depends on where you are. I'm in zone 6, and I just planted lettuce, chard, and spinach because they'll like the cooler fall weather. they'll last until a hard frost.
I've learned a lot here: gardenweb.com. They have a great forum.

It all depends on where you live, i can't offer too much advise for the US but i think mainly you need to avoid extremes of weather- extreme cold will freeze veggies and extreme heat will burn/dehydrate them. I don't know much about growing veggies so have just bought the things i liked and chucked them in to see how they go, and surprisingly most of them are doing well even though we started in the middle of winter!
