UPDATE:
We had our 2nd appointment with the lovely osteopath at pain management. The nortryptyline isn't working at 10 mg, so she doubled it.
Dd has had a migraine for over two weeks, with an aura in her left eye. The doc gave her a shot of Toradol, which took the edge off the headache, but didn't completely take it away. We had a referral to a neuro, and we had that appointment today. He said she should be on an even higher dose of the nortryp, but I'm happy with gradually increasing the dose, and see how small of one we can get away with. She's only having dry mouth as a side effect.
Ob/gyn said he wouldn't fill her scrip for Vicodin anymore, and the pain doc said she would. Of course, the hope is that she won't need it much, if at all, in the near future.
She's had two treatments with the tens. The first time was only 15 minutes, and the second 30. She said the 30 minute treatment seemed to be starting to help, but she said it needs to be deeper. The numbness is only on the surface, or just below. The doc is ordering her a unit to use at home, so I think that has a better shot at helping, with longer treatments.
That's the update. Nothing wonderful yet, but I am still hopeful.
I took my dd to pain management today. We got an Osteopath (YAY!) who was soooo wonderful!
I don't think I've seen pain management clinics mentioned here. Has anyone gone to one for their endo pain?
She recommended a diet (very much like the endo diet), tens (thank you for educating me on that, cherry), and...an anti-depressant. Now, we've been given this same drug previously for migraines and headaches my dd had several years ago, and turned it down. This doctor explained that the drug is being given to her in a "baby dose," as that is all that is needed to treat chronic pain. It shouldn't have any effect on dd's mood, except that she may have much less, or no, pain! Another happy side effect may be a reduction in her headaches (which she has frequently).
Dd even spent an hour poring over the diet, and said she already eats most of the things on it. The biggest challenge would be eliminating dairy. I am telling you guys, this doctor was so lovely, that dd listened to everything she said with full attention and respect. She's been fighting me on the endo diet, and yet this doctor hands her almost the identical thing, and she goes for it! However we get it done, I figure.
The doctor also recommended acupuncture. Well, dd tried it once, and decided she hated it. She likes this doctor so much that she agreed to try it again with the doctor's recommended acupuncturist!
I was wondering if anyone here had been prescribed an anti-depressant (like nortryptiline) to treat their pain. I was hesitant to try it, but after talking about it with dd, the doctor and the pharmacist, I am convinced it could help. The pharmacist actually told me that the drug was originally used as an anti-depressant, but it didn't work well. It did work well, however, for chronic pain sufferers.
I looked up the stats, and one of the warnings is suicidal thoughts in teens. Oh goodie. But it also says the dose for anti-depressant purposes is 25-150 mg, and the dose dd is getting is 10 mg. Dd and I talked and she will let me know if she feels anything bad from the drug.
I realize this is not a cure, but to get this girl out of pain and active and a normal teenager again would be so wonderful. Just thought I'd update y'all.
