I'm the office manager at a place I've worked at for 7 years and my mom's worked there my whole life so I've practically grown up in this company. Normally I really like my job and career choice. I'm good at it, and don't mind working hard to get paid well. LATELY things have been super stressful and I'm really hating it. We're gearing up for the busy season and co-workers are crabby, etc etc. Lets just say I needed this 3 day weekend BAD.
That being said, I just got a text from someone I work with asking if I could forward her orders tonight "in case" she goes in early tomorrow. In a nutshell, shes a great lady but she's SO stressed about everything all the time, and is super paranoid about being busy this week because it's a short week.
#1 - If she's going in early, she should only be doing so if she's got work to do.
#2 - I'm not working from home on my time, so she has work in the morning.
#3 - I'm not working on my time, if she might not even be going in early, which would only be a waste of my time.
I have no idea what to tell her back, so I'm just ignoring the text. I don't want to lie, but I can't think of anything polite and professional to say "uh...no"

Just tell her you're trying to enjoy your day of vacation and you hope she'd do the same! It is LABOR DAY, after all!

haha she is enjoying her day off, she wants me to work TODAY so she can get an extra hour of pay tomorrow. *sigh* I'll just say tomorrow that I was enjoying my LABOR day off. And she'll get upset because She's the one that has to work tomorrow. We do that same about of the orders so, I've got just as much to do as she does. I'll just prep for a battle tomorrow.

what a bunch of crap. I have the same type of job, and you get where you are willing to do a lot of tasks that are 'extra' just to keep the machine running. Sure, every so often, I'll do something on my own time because I know it will save me lots of time later (time explaining, time fixing things, or just time without people asking for things!) but every once in a while I get the same type of request from someone, and the only answer possible is: Wow, that's an interesting request. Please ask me again when we're in the office! I don't get paid for working from home. Then hopefully they'll see that it's really a huge inconveniece to be taken for granted so thoroughly that people arent even respecting 'your' time - at home! with family! living your own life! not working! HELLO! i feel you girl! pretty

Well what happened was she was saying early in the day about how she couldn't even think about work all weekend, let alone talk about it because she had such a crappy week. So I figured she would understand why i didn't. Later she asked me if I got her message and I told her yes and she says "and you just didn't feel like doing it?" I bit my tounge because i wanted to verbally slap her. I explained that like her, I needed time off work to relax and I didn't feel like working from home when work has been stressful lately.
I'm salaried so technically I do get paid for working from home but that's besides the point. I already put in 45+ hours a week in the office, I don't need to do 60 hours.

Just because you're salaried doesn't mean they can expect you to work stuoid hours for nothing - I'm guessing your contract stipulates your hours? At my place we're kind of expected to put the extra bits in here and there where necessary, ut if my boss specifically asks me to work over, I'd expect to get the time back.

It's the same with me - we're expected to work on if is needed but I usually do that to make my life easier. I have convinced them to pay me overtime though to work Saturday That woman would have got a verbal slap from me!!

Yeah. So...two weeks after my return to work, what did I do? I worked an entire weekend. Sat 9 am til 5 pm, Sunday 9 am til 3 pm. I haven't even been in that early during the week yet. I did it because it was our annual stock check. I went in at 10 yesterday, left at 2 to go to dentist and didn't go back in. Screw that, I was exhausted. Felt better today, went in at 9.30 but worked til 7.15. Yes, someone shoot me, please, because I'm an idiot.

I'm actually ok I think. Going in for 9 tomorrow but after that I'm aiming to be back to normal working life, which means 8.30 starts and working til well, whenever...I'm not going to be stupid though. On the plus side it feels quite nice to be getting back to normal again.

So much for easing into it, eh?
I'm working more overtime now. It's great because I'm hourly so I get overtime wages, but my body isn't liking me too much today because of it. Bleh. But on the upside, I'm really loving my job these days!
