I've never heard of this and would be interested to know! I always thought honey was ok cos of it's natural origins and I've noticed I respond better to it than sugars and sweeteners! In my opinion winnie the pooh was onto something! xx

Maple syrup still has a very high glycemic index. If you are avoiding certain types of sugars, maple syrup would be a no no.

"Sugar includes not just simple sugars, honey and maple syrup but also fruits, fruit juices, starchy vegetables and grain products or foods with a high glycemic index." Taken from www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=faq&dbid=32There is a glycemic index list at the bottom of that page.

Oh no Aussie! Those Banana and strawberry pancake stacks wont be the same without maple syrup! Maybe you can just have them as a treat once a month or something

I've never even seen the cookbook. You could always PM her to ask why it is okay (and note that it is a simple sugar) when other simple sugars are not okay. Just do a PM to "admin."

Its maple syrup and fruit juices that are ok, and thats pretty much it.
Im assuming it has something to do with it being from a plant source. But I cant be sure. I would guess honey is better than other sweeteners, ive noticed herbalists and naturopaths encourage sweetening teas with honey.
I dont think its about the GI, i think its about candida. But, in saying that anti-candida cuts out all sugars.
Other thought, is its to do with digestion, maple syrup may be the easiest on digestion. Thats my guesses. Its the only sugar im having, maple syrup and fruit juices, and im doing well on that, so at this stage not complaining. When im better, ill trial honey to see if i go ok on it.

^Exactly, anti candida-type diets cut out sugars, especially simple sugars like maple syrup and fruit juices. So, it doesnt' make sense (and yah, all types of sugar--simple and complex-- have something to do w/ the GI--where foods rank on the sugar scale). I think we shoudl PM Carolyn to have her explain it.

hello... I saw this thread and was curious myself to alternatives, and I found some important info on maple syrup, good to know since I'm Canadian (har, har). (fyi: I can't recall the site this is from sry...)
Maple syrup: Some maple syrups contain residue of formaldehyde, a carcinogen. It is, therefore, always best to purchase organic. Substitute 2/3 to 1/4 cup maple syrup for 1 cup white sugar. Maple syrup is a good source of potassium and calcium.
Date sugar: Date sugar is ground from dehydrated dates. It is high in fiber and contains folic acid. These tasty granules can be used to make toppings for pies and fruit crisps or for baking breads, cakes and muffins. Date sugar can be used in a 1 to 1 replacement for white sugar. Prior to making a batter, let date sugar dissolve. Store date sugar in a tightly closed jar.
^ this actually sounds like a good alternative, and with the right herbal tea, mmmmm!

In my botany class, the professor said that a lot of the immitation maple syrup is made by reconfiguring PineSol--that pine scented cleaner for kitchen floors!!!!!
