I tell you, it seems like inflammation is hidden at the bottom of a lot of health issues... Thanks for sharing, it's a different take than we're used to hearing!
(And I hope you feel better soon!)

So now I am not sure if taking immune boosters are really beneficial, since they help the body's inflammatory response. Right now the only one I take is extra Vit. C, but I was thinking about taking alpha-lipoic acid, l-carnitine, and possibly calcium d-glucarate and diindolylmethane. But hey, the less pills I have to take, the better! I have also seen coenzyme Q-10 as beneficial for us, but I took it for a week and it made me really sick (it lowered my blood pressure too much).

I've done a lot of reading about inflammation in the past (and just brushed up on it after reading your post!), and still have a lot to understand, but as I understand it, inflammation is a defense our body needs to disable pathogens and repair damaged tissue. That's why we get fevers when we're sick, swelling when we twist our ankles or have surgery, and get a sore throat with a cold. But, once the crisis is over, the inflammatory levels go back to normal. Or, at least, that's what's supposed to happen...
It's chronic inflammation that causes a whole bunch of problems, and getting chronic inflammation under control is a very good way of reducing or eliminating some of these problems (or potential future problems). Things associated with chronic inflammation are cancer, heart disease, alzheimers, allergies, autoimmune conditions, etc. Inflammation contributes to disease by thickening the blood, killing brain cells, causing free radical damage, and fuels cancer growth.
But, there are things that can be done to reduce inflammation as much as possible! NSAIDs and COX-2 inhibitors are options, but there are also a lot of supplements that can help as well. Check out "Life Extension Revolution" by Phillip Miller at the library, which is where I'm getting most of my info from - he gives a lot more detail, including basic supplements and dosages to help combat chronic inflammation. My new doc tends to follow similar practices as those discussed in the book, and at my request, she put me on a supplement to help with inflammation (http://www.designsforhealth.com/flyers/Inflammatone.pdf). I'm certainly not implying you should use it or endorsing it, but letting you know there are supplements geared towards just that that might be worth researching or talking to your doc about. I think many traditional docs may poo-poo the idea, but there are those out there that don't! In fact, my doc said she takes it, too.
Does that kind of help make sense of it?

My father-in-law, who's a nephrologist, said that those "immunity booster" packages you get at the store are actually really hard on your kidneys. You bombard your kidneys with this sudden influx of vitamins and pill fillers and your kidneys have to work extra hard to filter all that stuff. A normal person can handle the extra work but someone with compromised or reduced kidney function can't filter all that stuff and you create a whole load of problems.

I was watching Dr. Oz today and the show was inflamation diet I knew I had read this thread before so I looked back to kinda update a little on a few things I learned about the supplements that can help us with our immune system boosting which FLU season always makes me worry about how all of us will do out there in the flu world! OPC 3 is a supplement I am familar with and have used in the past I started my first dose of it for the season. It helps alot with our system in a variety of ways inflamation problems, immunity, memory people swear by this product. Its a quick mix & a little shot of energy taken in the morning give it a few weeks to work so start now if you are using it for flu season. Foods to pick up orange cauliflower is a new one I learned about from Dr. Oz, black cod & seafood, ginger, buckwheat all endo friendly too Hope this helps I will try get a recipe from my girlfriend from India the doc says the way they eat is the best for inflammation & I have to say none of my indian girls are ever sick! So run out and get curry chicken or a favorite indian dish it helps with alot.
