Did your doctor not wean you off so that you wouldn't get withdrawals?

Generally it is better, as ouchy said, to reduce your amount little by little instead of stopping suddenly. Even when I'm taking naproxen sodium for cramps every month I wean myself off, otherwise I get a raging headache. I can imagine with morphine it would be terrible to go off suddenly!

Maybe you should call your doctor and find out exactly how soon before surgery you need to get off the morphine, and also ask why you need to be off it. There could be a very good reason. Some types of medication can increase your risk of excessive bleeding during surgery. If he told you to stop taking it, there has to be a good reason and you could be risking your life by taking it now. I don't know how soon your surgery is, but if you don't have to stop taking the morphine yet maybe there is still time to be weaned off slowly. Also if you tell your doctor how much difficulty you are having off the medication, he should be able to tell you somehting you can do that will help. There may be a different type of medication that will be safe for you to take before surgery. It may not work as well as the morphine, but it could be just enough to keep you out of bed.

One reason could be that narcotics, of which morphine is a very strong type, slow down your digestive system. They will most likely use tons of narcotics in the anesthesia to put you under for your surgery, so they may not want to mix too many narcotics when you are under so that they can better control the anesthesia? I don't know. You should definitely ask your doctor.
