This past weekend was a the jewish holiday Sukkot or Sukko I can never get the spelling right. While we were in NYC we got to experience a few jewish boys walking around celebrating the holiday I have only ever seen a blessing done in temple never on the street so it was interesting to see these boys approach my husband and ask if he was jewish do a blessing with him. They carried lulav and etrog? I think that is the correct name which my husband even said he has never seen outside of temple. We missed a sukkah set up at Union Square in NYC but I did find of picture for those who are not familar with the tradition. Here is a little explanation.
The Holy Day lasts seven days, including Chol Hamoed and is immediately followed by another festive day known as Shemini Atzeret. The Hebrew word sukkôt is the plural of sukkah, "booth or tabernacle", which is a walled structure covered with flora, such as tree branches or bamboo shoots. The sukkah is intended as a reminiscence of the type of fragile dwellings in which the ancient Israelites dwelt during their 40 years of wandering in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt.
Each year my husband takes his class outside and they build a sukkah they eat honey and apples. My son loves it although neither of us are jewish we always celebrate the holidays with my husband. This year we missed all that but the fact we got to experience it like a New Yorker was pretty cool. My husband and I were shocked as how they approached everyone not knowing weather they were jewish or not it is not like that here at all but when you think of New York I guess many more jewish people live there then here. Another thing we saw while there was a jewish temple in the middle of China Town with a police officer standing in front of it on saturday. It was sad and obvious that crimes had taken place agaisnt some of the people that attended there they were walking to temple when we walked by so I am sure when a service is taking place the NYPD stay on guard for any problems. The temple had graffti all over it. It was something I had never seen before. Very interesting to see that these days people still show so much hate.
