Saw an interesting article today and figured it kind of fit here: apnews.excite.com/article/20100909/D9I4FEMG1.htmlBasically, the state of New York is going to start enforcing a law so companies that make cleaning supplies will disclose their ingredients. I'd especially be interested to see what all these new 'green' cleaners actually have in them!

Wasn't sure where to post this but thought it might be useful info for anyone trying to avoid oestrogen as SLS is in everything that lathers up from shampoo to toothpaste.
[...Perhaps most worryingly, SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) is also absorbed into the body from skin application. Once it has been absorbed, one of the main effects of sodium lauryl sulfate is to mimic the activity of the hormone Oestrogen. This has many health implications and may be responsible for a variety of health problems from PMS and Menopausal symptoms to dropping male fertility and increasing female cancers such as breast cancer, where oestrogen levels are known to be involved...]

(I moved this to its very own thread. Others can feel free to add things they find!)

So are there shampoos, toothpastes, etc out there that do not contain SLS? This is the first I've heard of it, now I'll have to start checking all my products.

UGh is anything safe? I feel like everything has something that does whatever to us... It's frustrating.

I read a couple bottles last night and found out that my medicated shampoo for sebhorreic dermatitis has SLS in it... **** me.

Also, some of my bottles said sodium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate... are these bad as well?

I try and not have anything with sulfates added at the end. Health food stores always carry some shampoos without this ingredient. Also want to avoid any paraben ingredients. Most lotions and shampoos have them. A lot of shampoos or lotions will now state on the front "no parabens" which helps.

In doing an overhaul of the cleaning chemicals and body chemicals (shampoos, toothpastes, lotions, etc), I found a few things that Burt's Bees either doesn't have, or the ones they do have contain "fragrance". Notably, sunscreen, nail polish remover, mouth wash, and aloe gel (for sunburns). I thought I'd share the things I did find that will work as replacements. Sunscreen: www.badgerbalm.com/c-6-suncare.aspxNail polish remover: lifestyle.iloveindia.com/lounge/homemade-fingernail-polish-remover-9511.htmlMouth wash: www.free-makeup-tips.com/home-remedies/home-remedy-mouthwashes.htmAloe gel: Obviously, you can use an aloe plant, but if you have animals that like to eat everything (like my cats do), plants may not be an option. Ingesting aloe leaves is poisonous to most animals. www.mountainroseherbs.com/learn/aloe-vera-gel.php

Ooh, thanks for the tips! I know there's a thread on natural cleaning solutions somewhere around here, might be worth looking into as well!
As a multi-purpose spray, I really like Trader Joe's ...Next to Godliness. I don't know if it's absolutely perfect in terms of what it has and doesn't have, but I like it!

Trader Joes spray is great and their laundry detergent is good too. I have found Dr. Mercola has great products for sunscreen and bug repellant and non Teflon cookware etc. His products are great. I also use his Krill Oil which is supposedly more potent and effective than fish oil.

One more thing: shave cream. I read that you can use aloe gel for this, and of course most people know you can use hair conditioner.

Another update--I was able to order almost everything I need (as far as Burt's Bees) from a website called Lucky Vitamin. The address is www.luckyvitamin.com. For 23 items, I paid $120 and got free shipping. This works out to about $5/item, pretty much the same as inexpensive non-organics from the drug store. I've never ordered from them before, so I'll let you guys know how fast shipping is.

Nice thanks for the site. I'm all over that kind of thing. I got rid of all my sulfates except my dish soap because Hubby bought it. I use Castile soap for cleaning and it can work for shaving too .... sounds like you're researching like crazy, keep posting your ideas! thanks!

Ok, toothpaste does not work for nail polish remover. Good thing I don't wear nail polish much.
My order came yesterday, so that's less than a week? Not bad. I'll definitely be using this company again.
