Hey Guys,
Just wanted your thoughts really...
I have pain all the time, it is horrendous just before, during and just after my period (vomiting, constipation, writhing in agony etc). I am then in pain for the rest of the month - some days it's 'ignorable' pain and other days it really isn't.
When I went to the docs months and months ago, they prescribed me Mefenamic Acid for pain and heaviness. It was the worst thing ever!!! Stupid amounts of pain for 3 weeks that month along with vomiting etc. Now I'm reluctant to take any anti inflammatories in case that happens again.
Now all I take is paracetamol and co-codamol.
I just wanted to know if anyone has had anything similar / your thoughts on what might be good.
Ta!!

I was never able to find a good painkiller that dealt with the pain with little side effects. For a while, though, I was in daily pain and so desperate that I was on vicodin (before my lap) and percocet (after my lap). I also tried gabapentin (awful) and was on tramadol for a while. In the end, I made diet modifications that allowed me to stop them, and now ibuprofin is my only go-to drug, and it works wonders when needed! I had discounted it in the past as being effective enough, but most days when needed, it works the best!
I hope you're able to get some answers soon so you can start to treat the roof of your pain instead of just masking it! In the meantime, perhaps some of the other girls can offer some other suggestions.

Thanks for that Karen I have made the diet mods recommended - no wheat, dairy, soy, sugar, caffeine, and very little alcohol (I know I should stop this completely, I'm working on it!). I think I may try ibuprofen again on a day when I have nothing to do in case it puts me in pain - I'd always used it before but as it's an anti inflammatory I've been reluctant...ah well, trial and error I guess!!

I got diclofenac from my doc. I don't take it very often these days, I 'gave up' anti-inflammatories due to constipation issues (not saying they were the only reason). I used to take 800 mg of ibuprofen every morning WITH breakfast to get a day's pain relief. I only use 50mg of diclofenac so I think it's easier on my tummy.

I'm a big fan of any type of NSAID drug. Those seem to work the best for my pain. NSAIDs are NonSteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, my favorites being Aleve and Motrin. I don't really have bad pain anymore though since I've been on the Nuva Ring. When you are taking your pain pills, are you taking them with food? They can be quite upsetting to your stomach and long term use can cause stomach bleeding.

Nurofen Plus liquid capsules (little red jewels I call them) can give a good, quick hit. But you must always take them with food.

Jenaya - I took the mefenamic acid and it really messed me up for weeks. Because it's an anti inflammatory I'm wondering if all anti inflammatories will have the same effect?? I never had trouble with ibuprofen before...I haven't taken anything except paracetamol and codeine for the last four months.
Hellsbells - I think I will try the little red jewels and see what happens!!
Paracetamol really isn't touching the pain and I don't like taking the codeine as it makes me sleepy (not great when in work!) and causes constipation as well as a banging headache after two days. And it's not really doing much for the pain any more. I sound like I'm whinging don't I!!!

Ibuprofen had a constipating affect on me - but then I'd been taking it for about 4 years! It can help a lot with pain but be careful how much you take, k? I got better relief by taking it with paracetemol.

Mefenamic acid is an NSAID too. You know what's funny is I was prescribed Naproxen one time which is also an NSAID and it really jacked me up. I was really sick with it but every other NSAID is fine for me. Maybe the Menfenamic acid just doesn't agree with you? I don't like narcotics either. I hate they way I feel drugged up and useless.

Thanks guys - I'm definitely never taking M acid again, but I think I'll give some other NSAID's a go - watch this space!!!

Ibuprofen or Diclofenac - with paracetemol would be my pain relief of choice.

Lets all just smoke pot. Seems to work right? LOL!
I'm partly kidding but kinda partly serious. It must be my inner californian talking since it's practically legal in California.
For the record, I don't smoke marijuana! But I am curious if it WOULD help the pain! What do you ladies think?

re: marijuana, This may only be one of those internet rumors but I belive in CA they are now perscribing it for menstrual pain.? I suspect the "side affects" for it would be worse then any vicoden or percoset but... maybe you would feel so good you wouldn't care?

In moderation side effects are minimal - no hangover and no liver damage!!

I totally agree about the pot! I smoked it one time as a teenager and it made me want to eat, eat, eat! Being a teenage girl this scared the crap out of me so I never touched it again...lol. Now I would give it a try for this pain FOR SURE! Lord knows it would have a lot less side effects than the awful narcotics I took for 18 years!
