I did a search and only saw one thread about belly dance and that was about whether or not if it is safe to dance if you have a chocolate cyst. I don't know much about chocolate cysts but I wanted to ask a different question and see what others had to say so I thought it would be alright to make a new thread.
Does belly dance help with endometriosis or any Period or female related problems or in general? I heard somewhere on-line that it could so I wanted to ask if anyone here dances, how does it it help or effect them.
If you have endometriosis or other health problems and dance, I would like to hear (well more like read) your experience about it.
My doctor wanted me to loss weight and I wanted to try something that would be fun and thought this would be a good way to lose weight and perhaps help.
I've been interested in Middle Eastern/oriental dance for awhile now but I don't take any classes for it. I have a few DVDs but don't use them all the time and wanted to know if I stick with it, would I notice any different with pain (its usually my lower abdomen that hurts but I get pain in other areas from time to time as well).

I think it would only help. It is important for the organs to be loose and free to move, if not you have more pain with the tugging etc. I did gymnastics for a while about 3 years ago and I felt great.

Thanks for your reply. I never really did any gymnastics but I heard that some exercises are safe for most people as long as it done right and can even help.
Glad that gymnastics has helped you.

I really need to get back into doing something. I would love to do gymnastics again and the Middle Eastern dance you are talking about. If only I could move somewhere less hick.

Yeah I have the same problem. I live in the middle of nowhere so there is nothing out here. I've been using DVDs to help me out.

I have pondered this too desertflower, as I've considered belly dancing and related dance forms to be beautiful and so good for the core muscles. Totally agree with michelle about keeping the abdomen free and moving.... there may be initial aches and discomfort but you'll loosen up as time goes on. I remember finding some videos on a how to website a while back, a teacher had posted a series of videos showing you the moves. I can post the link on here when I find it if you like? I learned to roll my hips and was so proud of myself, but then forgot all about it. I'd like to start with the videos first then maybe find a local class once I have some confidence. Shakira is mesmerising and it can be done whatever your tummy looks like (don't be put off by the claim that you need a little tummy fat, you actually just need a tummy and some hips and legs) I was practising it last year when I was skin and bone. It's great as a confidence boost and just feels like a celebration of your femininity.

If you can post the link, that would be nice.
Right now my hip rolls look weird. ;D
I was told today that someone is starting a dance class near by and will add belly dance along other dances so I'm going to check it out.
Oh I got plenty of tummy, I'm hoping it can help flatten it as well.
For a beginner video, I heard Jenna's basic and beyond is pretty good. I haven't tried that one out myself but heard a lot of good things about it. My first video was Amira Bellydance 101. I need to practice with it though.

Hey desertflower, I have some belly dance experience. I did it for 4 years when I lived in colorado. It was a lot of fun, but honestly it's not much of a work-out.... it's comparable to doing some really light stretching while standing up. You won't raise your heart rate much at all. It is however empowering, ultra-femenine, sensuous, and above all pretty fun. But most of the moves are just learning to isolate and pretty much rotate or shimmy different areas of your bod. Also, it can be 'taught' by anybody who thinks they're good at it, which can be totally funny too. You always find a teacher who's never going to admit that you can shake your fanny just as well as she can... even though everyone can see, we're all just shakin' our fannies! The fun part is gettting those moves down and then having a wierd middle eastern song to do them to, and that's really fun. Check it out, but I don't think it's gonna flatten your belly, shed the pounds, or what have you, but you'll make friends, have some much-needed fun, and learn to count in 5's (the music is AWESOME and confusing) Pretty

Has anyone tried bellydancing on this forum? I just started taking classes and wondered if it would have a favorable effect on endo pain.
My endo pain is atypical right now though, in that it's on the abdominal wall on the right side, just below where my ribs end. I will see if this new dance form helps me any. It certainly doesn't seem to have a bad effect!
It work work your entire torso, pelvis, hips, etc., so I wonder if it could help people with pain.

(I moved this into an existing, relevant topic. I think there's at least one more out there, too.)
