Sooooo..... my husband and I became aware of a mistake on my taxes from 2003 for the state of california and realized it's probably worth doing the honest thing and amend my taxes to correct the situation. I PAID... again, PAID a tax preparer to amend my taxes for 2003 and I PAID the state of california back $380 out of my own honest integrity to do the right thing. You know what those bastards did? They sent me a freakin bill for interest on the corrected balance from 2003! That's 6 years worth of interest that collected on a $380 balance! I'm so angry! This is what I get for being an honest citizen!?!?!?

WHAT? They are seriously making you pay interest after on your own good will, you ammended your taxes and paid the difference. Thats just the dumbest thing ive ever heard. Taking money from honest people is the last thing they should be doing.

SERIOUSLY!!! When they've owed us money WE don't interest! I remember one tax return took a freakin year to get back because they were so behind in paper work. I should have sued them for interest!

Why not give it ago? If they can charge you interest from years ago, why can't you claim it back? One for the little people!!!!!

Frigging typical of government agencies... take money from you with one hand and slap you with the other. One thing I learned in debt collection is that you never get a thank you for doing the decent thing. In future, wait for them to come to you. Jenaya I don't know much about tax, so this might be a stupid question. Does the Statute of Limitations (renders a lot of things void if not pursued for a 6 year period) cover your underpayment?

Jenaya, I don't know how this works in the US, but I ran into a similar problem a couple of years ago.... We wound up having a stern chat with the accountant who did our taxes for the year in question; and the settlement was that (of course) we paid the back taxes owing, but the accountant paid us the cost of the interest because he had screwed up. Maybe a gesture of 'professional good faith' on my accountant's part? (...I mean, I growled at him but I don't think I'm all that scary!). Why don't you try arguing it with your tax preparer?

Well here's the deal, it's a LONG LONG F'd up story. I went to this tax preparer when I was I think 19 years old. Not knowing at the time, but this company was running a total scam business. They would fraud everything on your taxes to get these large returns for you, then they'd take a percentage and hand you the rest. I had no idea it was going on and back when I was 19, I didn't know any better to demand a copy of my taxes or to check it all over. All I knew is that I was getting decent returns and everything was fine. So the first year I was audited, I went back to them to fight with them over doing my taxes wrong. Well, those pieces of sh*t packed up their business and disappeared! So in the end, their customers got stuck with this HUGE mess. I reported them up and down to the state and the feds but they're pretty much gone. I'm guessing they fled the country with all of our money. It has taken me a total of 6 years to clear this mess up, run my own amendments to my taxes and to do the honest thing and pay it ALL back, WITH INTEREST! Just when I thought I had it all straightened out, I get that last stupid bill for the interest. SO again, when I finally thought I could put all this mess behind me I get that slap in the face. Hard lesson learned but I know now never to let my taxes be done and not look it over with a fine toothed comb. My advice... NEVER mess with the IRS. They will ruin your life.

It was such a horrible thing to go through. Here I handed over all of my personal financial information only to be taken advantage of. It angers me even more that I had to struggle for 6 years to pay thousands of dollars back to the IRS while these people are out living it up with MY MONEY! I hope they get caught one day.
