I just need to rant because i am so mad and upset. I was laid off my job in Arpil and applied for employment insurance and was accepted. Picked up a PT job in the summer doing some marketing for a race track(seasonal). When i went into the EI office to enquire as to when that would run out, I was told that my employment insurance wasnt going to run out till Apr 2010 so i figured why look for a FT job when im having surgery? I did everything i was supposed to. I claimed all monies that i earned at the race track to EI, had it deducted from that check and so on. I recieved a letter yesterday stating that my regular enefits have run out so i will no longer be getting an unemployment check. What am i supposed to do? I cany go back to work yet and although my husband has a job, we cant afford to live on just what he makes. Im going to go see the surgeon and get him to sign a document stating i cant work so hopefully they will extend my benefits as medical unemployment insurance. This is the last thing i needed while trying to recover

I'm sure your system is different than the US, but I can say the state of Wisconsin is HORRIBLE when it comes to unemployment info. I'm an honest person and have worked 2 jobs for years, but when I got laid off of my full-time job, my part time job really worked against me, and even though I was up front about it and claimed my earnings, they still decided to audit the woman that I work for. Such a mess. All that and I only collected unemployment for 7 weeks! I mean, I'm all about getting a little bit of help for a little bit of time when I absolutely need it, but I am in no way one to live off the system, but that's exactly how they treated me. It was awful and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

The thing im not understanding is that i was told my regular benefits would run out April 2010 when in fact they ran out ALOT sooner. Im not one to live off the system either but after working for nearly 20 years and paying into unemployment insurance for all that time, one would think that because im only using the money i paid into, it should be there for me when i need it. O well, this is just a curve in the road. The letter did state that medical and/or maternal benfits may still be payable so i guess i will have to try and go down that road. Im going into their office today to get that started.

Yeah, no one here can really get a straight answer about when their benefits will run out, either. Some states I hear are better than others, but for Wisconsin, it's all a guess.
Best of luck getting somewhere today!

Jeez I really feel for you guys in the US when it comes to unemployment and medical cover. It's not always great over here, but I feel so lucky to have what we have. Pamela I hope you get it sorted and don't have to struggle xx

the system is so messed up. I don't understand how your benefits can just all of a sudden run out, but the government always finds a way. I always thought EI was just your own money coming back to you though. So if you have a certain amount invested in EI how can it all of a sudden change?
If you don't get anywhere you can always call your MP's office and have them sort it out for you. Hopefully it all works out!

That sucks! My hubby and I are also unemployed (5 weeks now) and it sucks to get all this stuff sorted out. They denied my benefits during my first 2 weeks of recovery because I was not able to work if I found a job. My employer laid me off a week earlier than planned because of my surgery. That was 3 days after they let my hubby go with no explanation. That was a huge shock as they originally told him that they were going to try to keep him employed.
I do wish you luck and hope that your benefits will be reinstated so you can have time to heal and then start the job search. My heart breaks for everyone who is in this situation.

I have been out of work for just a hair over two weeks, and definitely feel for everyone here in this situation. I got screwed, because as a part time employee (doesn't matter that I often worked 30+ hours/wk, only matters that I wasn't SCHEDULED for 30 hrs/wk or more), I get no unemployment. Also, I haven't had any benefits for almost three months, and couldn't enroll in school, this semester, because of that stupid job (clusterf00k of a situation, they have screwed me for 20 months, over and over), and I take Nexium. $190/mo for that stuff w/out insurance. I'm going to have to resort to prostitution.
*sigh*
I was told that I probably wouldn't get laid off, b/c they still needed someone to do my job. I got shyte-canned anyway. The only thing that's keeping me from hanging myself is my wry sense of humor, knowing that Karma will keep my hands clean, and no matter what, I have people who can and will help me, even when I refuse to ask.
The only upside to my present situation is the following: I don't have to deal with the nasty little supervisor who single-handedly screwed me from day one, so that's a plus - I won't have a murder wrap, lol.
The bitch of the whole thing: I can't get all of my 401k money, b/c I'm still "active," as in "on active leave." And to even get about 45% of what's in there, I have to get together a f00kton of documents together proving that I'm screwed. And what'll that pay for? Just my ONE prescription. They f00ked me by laying me off, and f00ked me worse by not altogether shyte-canning me. Ah, well.

my benefits got cancelled as of midnight the day i was laid off so have been without benefits since April 6th. My pain meds cost me about $170/mnth and only getting $314/bi-weekly on EI didnt help. I would of resorted to prostitution but i think ppl would rather pay me to put me clothes on than take them off...lol(there's a thought). My doc had me on Nexium and gave me a 6 months supply for free. Turns out i cant take them. What sux is that i have $1140 worth of meds in front of me that i cant take and you cant afford. Wish i could find a genie to grant me 3 wishes because one of them would be to give you my Nexium supply.

Yikes, Sunshine, that really bites. Fingers crossed that you'll find something soon!
And in the meantime, at least have fun with the prostitution! Kidding, kidding...

You girls are sweet.
And if I find the right escort service, the whole "going pro" thing could, as a matter of fact, turn out to be quite a lot of fun, lawl.
