I just wanted to start a thread regarding the current helath crisis and find out what others opinions/views are. The reason for me doing this is that i got a letter from my son's hockey league stating the kids will no longer shake hands prior to a game but instead keep their gloves on and just touch gloves with the opposing team.
Secondly, all kids must have their own water bottle and hand sanitizer at each game. I can agree with the water bottle but the sanitizer.
Is H1N1 really spreading that fast or are people just making a mountain out of a molehill?

My opinion on is that people are going way too far with this. If you read the symptons of this flu, it is no different than any flu. People can get the flu by touching a door knob that someone else has. If someone has a weak ammune system then yes I think that they should get this shot. I think your sons hockey team is going a little far. I can understand the gloves - but hand sanitizer? My thoughts and prayers go out to anyone or anyone in their family who has suffered but I feel that everyone should be able to take their own precautions. I hope I didn't offend anyone!

I agree with cware000 the ways of getting the swin flu and the ways of getting the regular flu are the same. They are going crazy with the swin flu. Yes, the swin flu has killed alot of people so far and it being so early in the season. But, I know a lot of people that are exposed to it (emt's and paramedic's) and they haven't gotten it. I also understand the gloves and water bottles but I don't understand the hand sanitizer.

Around here, it's spreading like wild fire. Several schools around here have closed for a week because 40%+ of the staff and students called in sick!!! 40%!!!! It's spreading like wild fire, fast mover.
I know around my office, things were spreading like wild fire. I'd guess at least 1/3 of the office was miserably sick last week, and we have a few cases of confirmed swine flu at work, although they can't tell us who or what department due to privacy laws. I thought it was all a bunch of crap, too, until it started... It's hitting, and hitting hard.

For what it's worth... from what I've seen (my province was hit hard this summer), most people with H1N1 have nothing but the 'flu; and some very few but unlucky people get the full systemic inflammatory response, ARDS, ventliator, taps. Trouble is, you have no idea which group you've going to be in until it's over. No joke. ...So for me, I'm getting immunized, and hand-sanitizing all over the place . Most horrible thing I saw was when pregnant women get H1N1. Without breaking patient confidence, most I can say is that it's no good for them, and double so for the baby. Something important to learn there about immune system function during pregnancy, but not sure anyone understands the mechanism quite yet. My mum used to tell me "everything you know is like the grains of sand held in your fist; and everything you don't know is the whole beach". Old Tamil proverb...

A big part of the spread is no one stays home anymore when they are sick. What's worse is everyone panics so they go to the emergency room and flood health clinics when all they really need to do is stay home and rest. Instead they infect the rest of the people in the waiting rooms who are in the ER for actual emergencies! I got the flu because I was in the ER on the weekend, waiting for hours surrounded by panicked people with the flu. Granted some did need help, but most of them jut needed sleep and fluids.

and hand sanitizer? I hate that stuff! soap and water works for me thanks. besides, what good will it do on the bench at a hockey game? The only time you take your gloves off is to drink water, or get in a fight. I do agree with the separate water bottles though. Some kids are really gross about the water/spitting on the bench.

I've been reading alot on the flu lately and i agree with Karen that it's spreading but also agree with uncomfortable that nobody stays home anymore. One of the articles I've read is that since the outbreak of the H1N1, roughly 1400 Canadians have died from this strain but it also stated that regular flu killss roughly 4000 Canadians a year.
On that note, I actually went to the Emergency Room last night because I was having severe chest pain/burning. I was shocked to find there were only a couple of ppl waiting.
P.S....I put a mask on as soon as i got there and kept sanitizing the whole time I was there.

Trouble is, you have no idea which group you've going to be in until it's over. Well put, Osb!

I've apparently had swine flu, twice going by distance diagnosis (they will not see you in the doctors surgery due to fears over spreading to ther patients) with no testing to confirm. 1st time was when the initial big panic hit and I was given Tamiflu. I am a big hand washer and use hand sanitiser and love to use disinfectant wipes. But I caught it anyway. I pick up any virus going around these days

im with you on that one cherry...you name a virus and i will get it. Did the Tamiflu work? The doc was going to perscribe me that last night because he said my chest pain could be the onset of the flu. My god i hope not

I felt my symptoms ebb and flow on it, which was a bit unpleasant cos you'd feel better when you took it then a few hours later it'd hit you again til you took the next dose. But going by how long it took me to get over this second flu, it helped me get through it and over it much faster. I only felt crappy for just over 2 weeks in total. This one was a total of 5 weeks including 2 weeks full blown flu symptoms.

The only flu symptoms i have are a sore throat and diareha. My temp has only gotten as high as 98.8 so doc wasnt sure if i had flu. He said it coulda been heartburn but the burning in my chest is still there. I normally have diareha anyway due to IBS so its not so unusual. He was going to perscribe it just in case i got a fever. I told him i'd be back if my symptoms got worse.
4 days to surgery.....fingers crossed its not the onset of flu
