OMFG, I hope you start to feel better very soon. If mecc = mecclizine (sp?), then you should start to feel better within a couple of hours, and very, very sleepy. Hurray, mecclizine!
Totally agree w/jenaya - the multiple attempts with one cath... flabbergasted.

Which antibiotic did they give you? I feel for you though, I hate, hate, hate UTIs. For some reason, that is one of the few types of pain/discomfort that I just cannot deal with. I would rather be knocked out then awake with that pressure and urgency. Take care, hopefully they gave you the right abx cuz they usually kick in for me within a day or so.

ciproflaxin, I haven't done a look up on it yet but I believe it was a stronger med then usual.

looks like cipro is used: "To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of CIPRO Tablets and CIPRO Oral Suspension and other antibacterial drugs, CIPRO Tablets and CIPRO Oral Suspension should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria." (rx list) So do you suppose this means he thinks its a 'hospital born bacteria?

Hmmmm, I wonder. It would go to support Jenaya's theory about contamination d/t the misuse of the catheters. I would definitely write to the hospital to complain about the reuse of the catheters b/c that is NOT acceptable, especially if you find out that the bacteria was acquired from your ER trip (hell, they should pay your bill and subsequent expenses). I know they typically throw me on macrobid for a UTI. Cipro makes me very sick too.

I think I was prescribed cipro for a suspected UTI. In the end, even though I had blood in my urine, the bacteria came back negative for an infection so it was all a waste anyway. Symptoms eventually calmed down, but my doc thought they were likely due to inflammation in my belly.
Did they rule out kidney stones? I'd be surprised if that was it, but can cause symptoms like that and lots of pain.

When I had a kidney infection they gave me cipro and yes, it gave me a lot of nausea. You said they cultured your urine right? So that way you can see what strain of bacteria it is. The most common UTI bacteria is e.coli and that's just from our own bodies getting it from the rectal area. If it's something else then I'd be suspicious of it being hospital acquired. Are the antibiotics making the abdominal pain feel better?

No, this whole thing has been botched up from the begininng. I'm still waiting to hear about the culture since one lab said yes and the other said no... who do I believe? I also had a UTI that ''wasn't'' a week after my last surgery. They gave me sulfomides and called three days later and said not to bother. SO... we will see? My symptoms aren't relieved yet so I don't know what to think.

I just feel like throwing a temper, temper (as my six year old says) I'm hurting like all fire too and still peeing constantly. I'm so over all this crap! ARGH! sorry ladies... i would have dumped on my 'friend' but I don't seem to have that option tonight. grr...

So I got a new doctor this morning! Yeah! They are at a branch of the clinic I go to for my Gynecologist so it should make it a lot easier to coordinate care etc... I'm pretty happy about that! ;D I registered a formal complaint against my clinic with my insurance and am giving them a written complaint as well with the ER instructions attached. I called my wen. doctor to ask about the culture and it seems like a simple UTI so no 'hospital born infection' anyways! I wish I would start feeling better soon though. I guess its going to take the full dose to get rid of this UTI

Yay for new doctors!!! And YAY for lodging the complaint! If they can't communicate effectively with the ER and get you the care you need, they need to be in deep doo-doo about it!
