I go for my hysterectomy on October 21st and last night I had a very bad seizure. I was throwing up and had muscle spasms with it. The entire ordeal lasted hours. My docs have said they believe them to be complex partial seizures and when I am in the hospital for surgery they are going to start me on meds and observe me. Last night while going thru all this I took a zofran to stop the nausea. Within minutes I was having a medicine induced dystonic reaction and went into aphasia. I took cojenten to cancel out the reaction and I was able to speak some what normal but didnt make sense much all night. I went to bed and woke up fine today. Well kinda I feel like I was hit with a truck and can't walk well from the muscle spasms in my legs.
I could take zofran a month ago and now I cant. My husband thinks my body just had too much from the seizure and does not think it was the medicine that did it but the only way to know that is to take the medicine again and see what happens! My doc was going to use that as my anti nausea med after my surgery. I am just at a loss of what to do I am afraid to even go under now. I am crying and upset about it. I know worrying will not do anything good for me I can not handle the stress of it all. I just want to be normal again. I have no idea what meds I can or can not take anymore. They are running out of meds that I am not allergic to. I could be on a med for a little and then all of the sudden go into a dystonic reaction. At what point is my body not going to allow me to not take anything? Docs say they can not do anything about that I am just super sensitive to meds. I JUST WANT TO BE NORMAL! Whatever normal is?

BOY, is it just a rough week for everyone or what! two people waiting for surgery now either can't or just worried they can't. I'm so sorry Keri! Big Gal's surgery is being cancelled cause her hubby got fired. Maybe the two of you can console each other.

HOLY CRAP! This is nuts! It's interesting because I had a dystonic reaction to phenergran which is also an anti-nausea med. I hope everything goes ok and that the surgery helps! this stuff is scary!

The weird thing that none of the docs can figure out is how I can take the medicine and then a some point I cant. I took phenergan on and off for years for nausea and one day I took it and it put me into a dystonic reaction. Same with benedryll, morphine all of them really and now zofran. I am like a guinea pig with meds now. They try one it works and then have to try another one because I go into a reaction. It is scary and frustrating!

well the most obvious answer to that is all allergic reactions build up over time. Doctors should know that. I had IV contrast once and was fine but the second time I had a severe reaction. It just takes time for your body to become allergic to something and the best way to do it is to keep exposing yourself. Since you chronically get a lot of medications, it was only a matter of time before you started to become allergic. But on a side note, people can use meds their whole lives and never become allergic. You're just a special girl and are sensitive to everything. I really hope that you find something to help you with all this especially since you're so drug sensitive.

Yep that makes sense. My neurologist mentioned that he thought I had a enzme in my body that rejects medicine but he could not be sure no way to test that theory. He said he as seen people do have issues with anaesthesia but never all meds or someone special like me LOL. I'm joking he didnt say the last part but he did say the first part. I find it odd that these docs act like I am some sort of freak. Like they have never seen someone so sensitive to meds. I mean I can't be the only one!

lol well, youre not the only one but it is rare! I remember everytime someone said they were allergic to benedryl everyone would think WTF!!?? Too bad the neurologist couldn't test that enzyme theory. That'd be nice to know.

Ok so now I really no I am not normal! I went into see my neurologist today and he has told me I can not drink any wine, beer, alcohol or caffiene. I guess they all can provoke a seizure! Ok I do not drink that much at all. Infact I am always the sober one I know my limit 2 or 3 at the most! The night before I had my long episode a few weeks ago I had went out with friends and drank 3 beers. Not alot at all but the doc seems to think that with my sensitivity to medicine that I now have a sensitivity to alcohol. I got the lecture of alcohol being a depressant that it slows brain activity down. He said I have to not drink, go to bed a a resonable hour by 11 each night should be fine and stay away for caffeine. I guess lack of sleep causes seizures too. I felt like I was being lectured by my mom when I was in college. I can obey all of these rules:) I am just shocked that almost everything can cause one of these episodes in me. 3 drinks, medicine, a long day, stress, a long night! Gosh he said I could still have a life but hmmmmm when and how? LOL!

Oh, Keri... What else are they going to say?? For whatever reason, your body is over-reacting to so many different things. There has to be a way to desensitize it so it doesn't freak out at the littlest things! Whatever the case, though, focus on getting through the surgery, first. Forget about all that other stuff until the big day is over. If it makes you feel any better, I'd be more than willing to have an extra drink or two for you if you think that would help.
