So I had my regular check up with my dentist this morning and she asked if there were any changes in my health since my last visit. I said, "well yes, I had surgery a month ago for endometriosis." And she was like, "oh lots of people have that. They get the surgery then they have lots of babies!" I shrugged that annoying comment off and then I went on to explain how much better I feel blah blah blah and she looked at me all shocked and said, "It was causing you problems?? You had pain with it??" LOL now I don't expect a dentist to know what endo is but GEEZZZ I had f*cking surgery for Christ's sake! I didn't do it for fun!!!

I had a similar experience with my dentist! I was still all hopped up on pain pills when I went for my check-up and ended up with a chatty hygienist. It's hard enough to be chatty when they're poking around in your mouth, and even more so when you're so out of it! When she was taking my history, she had to ask how to spell laparoscopy and asked what Mirena was when she updated my meds...
And I had a similar response with a coworker - she knew several of her friends had surgery to clear out endo so they could get knocked up, but she had no idea it could cause all sorts of other problems. Honestly, before last year, I wouldn't have known, either, but I'd think perhaps a dentist might be more up to speed on things...

Doctors don't know it all. In fact, most of them don't even have bachelor's degrees! All you need are the biology and chem classes to get you a good score on the MCAT, then it's off to med school you go.
My cousin works with HIV/AIDS patients and has since the 1980's up in San Fran. Her sister (my other cousin, lol) had a hysterectomy due to endo. The doctor cousin had NO clue what endo was, even when I told her I had the same thing her sister did and why she ended up w/ a hysterectomy.
Even in just simple discussions, it's obvious both she and her husband (a retired neurosurgeon!) aren't well versed on a lot of the medical problems out of their specialty.

There are medical schools out there than only require the pre-medical requirements but it's extremely rare. Most doctors DO have bachelor's degrees but there are few out there that don't. I think that's insane! Most of the best education I'll be getting for pre-medicine is in my last two years of my undergrad. I can't imagine only having the pre-med stuff going into medical school.

Ah. I guess I lived in a state (not where I live now) that the main universities didn't require a B.S. for entrance. I only knew one person who finished the pre-med degree before being accepted! All of the older doctors I knew, too, including my cousin, none of them had B.S.'s.
They all took just like the biology, chemistry stuff and then bam. Took the MCAT and got accepted!
