So I've been using hot water bottles quite a bit to sooth pain and give me a bit of comfort as I have some trouble with a big endometrioma thats popped up outta nowhere. Thing is I now need to see my doctor as I may have caused some slow occurring burns to my tum. My two friends at work saw my tummy and had seen similar odd looking skin on a story where a woman had burned herself carrying a hot water bottle around. Here is a pic of my tummy before my lap in August 07 s170.photobucket.com/albums/u280/lily_cherry84/?action=view¤t=NewImage.jpgAnd a pic from this evening (skin is red due to hot water bottle use bout 10 mins beforehand) s170.photobucket.com/albums/u280/lily_cherry84/?action=view¤t=belly09.jpgDespite the redness you can see the mottled blotchiness of my skin? I'm going to see my family doctor to get it checked out. Bottom right of that second photo you can see a little lap scar My belly is also distended in the second photo so it may distort it a bit. Just hope you guys are all being careful and if you have any red blotchiness after using a hot water bottle or wheat pack, do get it checked out. Easier said than done given the relief we get from these things Tried to stick the pics on but it wouldn't work for me so just links today

Thanks Cherry! Very good to know...I too have my waterbottle on my tummy at all times. I will be more careful with the water temp. They aren't commonly used here in Canada, so I often get funny looks when I am sitting in the docs waiting room with it tucked down the front of my trousers. lol =) I don't care...when you're in this much pain, you don't mind looking nuts! My Mom is Scottish so as soon as I started my periods, out came the hot water bottle. Electric heating pads can be dangerous too. I have a terrible scar from burning my lower back with a heating pad. I fell asleep on it, knocked out by pain meds and didn't feel it burning me. =(

Some electric heating pads come with timers.

Wow! Hope the spots go away. I know I have a couple scars from the stick-on-heating pads...but it is my fault. I stuck them directly to my stomach instead of my shirt.

Thank you for this Cherry - the pics don't work but I get the general idea. The problem is I am attached to my hot water bottles and heat pad and sometimes through clothes I just don't get the relief so it goes directly on my skin. I'll speak to the doc about it on Monday

How about an insulated hot water bottle? Mine's got this cute sheep fleecy cover that protects from the fierceness of it, then when it cools down I take the cover off.

They have covers, I think it's because I lie on the bottle when I'm in bed so it's on my lower back. Pressing that much against it I can really feel the pain calming, but it's obviously taking it's toll on my skin.

My surgeon laughed when she saw my belly. I am super pale so my heating pad burns are bright red and splotchy looking. You can pretty much always see them. Anyhow I said "I bet you see a lot of this" lol and she laughed and said she's seen much much worse working with so many endo patients. She said a lady came in who was using one of those rubber hot water bottles and had the label burnt into her skin. Of course this is not funny but at the time I thought it was the funniest thing ever....

Yeah I do that laying on it Gem. I was embarassed about my tummy burns but beside my pain doc and couple of GPs, none of them were concerned enough to mentioned it. I just bio-oil and cocoa butter when I can, try to do it warm rather than hot (I used to use 1/8 cold, 7/8 boiling water) and try not to lay on it and vary the sites. Just conscious of a boyfriend seeing that in future. I try to keep my endo to myself due to how my ex was about it so that marbling would bring a lot of questions as to how/why I burned myself. Preety it's reassuring to know we aren't the only ones, but like we are with endo too, it's sad huh...

I'm not too bothered by it, as it's on my back I'd not noticed it but I think it's quite a new thing. I'm trying to put something between me and the heat rather than straight on bare skin when I can, but I think as heat is one of my main pain relief methods - like most of us - I might just have to grin and bare it. It is good to know that there are other girls who have done that, but it really does suck. I am still getting my head around all the random related things to endo that happen to us - it still amazes me the stuff we go through!

Don't u girls have wheat bags over there? ? Over here we can buy them from the chemist..... It's a bag full of wheat. But then covering the bag is material..... There's no chance of burning.... Unless you heated the bag for 10 minutes or so but even then you wouldn't dare put it to your skin.

We have rice bags that you can throw in the microwave and heat up. I'm not sure of the wheat bags. We might!
I'm guessing when you say chemist, that means pharmacist to us?

Yeah, we have wheat and rice bags (and chemist's in the UK!!!!), but I find they don't last as long as hot water bottles and when I feel rough I don't want to be up and down every 30 mins to heat it up again!! I need a lot of heat to feel relief although I am being more cautious now, I might make a rice bag and see how that goes - a fun project with a purpose!!
