Hi there, My nutritional therapist, along with a practitioner of integrative medicine, believe I am lactose intolerant. They've excluded casein/milk protein/whey intolerance and sent me to the GP to ask for tests to confirm it so that I don't risk nutritional deficiencies from being on a dairy free diet long term (loss of sources of vitamin A, B vitamins, protein, calcium). GP is unsure of which tests are reliable. I've read there are four: hydrogen breath test (hydrogen levels are measured after avoiding any food for a specified time, then giving a drink containing lactose), blood glucose level measurements, stool acidity test and (what I'd imagine would be rare to do: biopsy from the small bowel to check amounts of lactase in tissue). Has anyone else been through tests for lactose intolerance (as opposed to milk protein/casein/whey intolerance and milk allergy)? What has your experience been?
