hmmm, apologies if this is a rude response, but 9hrs seems a normal amount of sleep. 8-10hrs is a standard requirement for anyone.

9 hours is a reasonable amount of time, if you are lucky enough to live in a society that respects that. Unfortunately, in America that isn't the case. So much is expected of people every day that anything more than 6 hours per night is considered a luxury. This is especially true for women who are expected not only to work as many hours as men (10-14 hours per day five to seven days per week), cook and clean (2 hours per day), work out to keep slim (at least an hour a day), AND look beautiful while doing it (at least an hour every morning for shower, blowing dry your hair, curling your hair, picking out the perfect outfit, and putting on makeup). That's 14 hours right there. Add a forty-five minute commute to work each way, eating dinner, grocery shopping, paying the bills and other miscellaneous errands, and that's 18 hours a day, and we haven't even factored in time for friends, watching TV or reading a book or any other form of relaxation.
So even though 8-10 hours is the recommended amount, many people simply can't get that because there aren't enough hours in the day to do everything they have to do. That means that people like schernoff124 and myself, who MUST get 8-10 hours of sleep, end up being looked at like failures because we simply don't have time to do everything that's expected of us. I can't even tell you how many times people have made disparaging comments about my being LAZY because I sleep 8-10 hours a night instead of "accomplishing" more or being more "useful."
So, schernoff124, I hear ya. The only recommendation I can make is to cut back on your obligations as much as possible so that you can fit everything you need to do into 12 hours a day. That gives you a two hour cushion to finish things up and have some time for YOU. And always remember that you and your health are far more important than anything anyone expects of you. *hugs*

Ok, im at risk of offending people now, but nah i cant stay silent.
I have cfs, im tired on any amount of sleep, i often need at least 12 hrs sleep to function a little, so sorry no sympathy at all for people who cant get their 8-10hrs.
Hmmm, all that stuff you 'must' do. Look i dont care what country you live in, thats a crock. If youd ever been as sick as what ive gotten youd know the world keeps spinning whether all that stuff is done by you or not.
If you cant find 8-10hrs in a day to sleep, its time to change your life, seriously, if your driving yourself into the ground that much your asking for trouble.

i am going to agree with KB on this one! i dont really have sympathy fo r people who are tired due to things that are totally within their control and to say that they are align to cultural factors and society's expecatations is a bit far fetched!
i am constantly tired but i choose to do the things that i do that make me this way! work out to keep slim ( i personally do it for my health) if you want to look beautiful by curling/blow drying your hair then dont complain. i think it comes down to prioritising and half the things you have mentioned arent priorities other than work. if it is affecting your health and your sleeping patterns then i think thats enough reason to make changes. (i.e. dont go to the gym if youa re tired get an extra hours sleep!)

I *try* to get 8 hours night. Reason why I'm always so sleepy is because I'm up at 4am four days a week! It just really is so unnatural and while it is somewhat easy to get us, by 4:30pm... your day is basically over.
I've stopped going to the gym because of sleep reasons - I cannot say my school work is more important than my body for health reasons, but I've changed my diet to fit a lifestyle without the gym (for the moment). But sometimes your life just cannot be changed, we know this Cass. I've got 5 classes, 25hrs of work a week, an apartment, a bf... these things may seem to be in our control, but often they are not - depending on the situation. Sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the day....

Your life can always be changed, your always in control, to think otherwise is a cop out.
Even when were at deaths door their are always choices, sometimes our choices are more limited, but they are always there.
A road accident is out of our control, how you choose to spend your life is not. Even in a road accident there are choices although slim, they are still there.
Your never trapped, people who say they are just dont like the other options. Its about priorities, if doing all those things matter most, they will come before sleep, if your health comes first, really comes first, all those other things will take a back seat.
There is ALWAYS a choice. If you cant see it, your not looking hard enough.

If I don't get at least 8 a night, I don't feel right the next day. It's sometimes hard to achieve working two jobs in order to pay bills, but I try my best. Yes, your health certainly comes first or there is no reason to live, however living requires putting a roof over your head and food in your mouth! It's a vicious cycle....

Kb, I see where you are coming from and I'm not going to fight you on this - but I think you need to realize that it's not easy for everyone and that IS NOT a cop out. I'm a full time student who NEEDS to work to survive. If I put my health first, I couldn't afford to live. I have NO choice but to literally bust my rear every day so that in the future I don't have to do this. Do I have choices? Sure. I can drop out of school, or drop down in class... but the would leave me in school for the rest of my God given life. Can I cut hours or quit my job? It's being discussed by myself and my bf, but we will suffer from only having one income. I think that it's EASIER for some people to be ABLE to change their lifestyle, while others need to make SACRIFICES now to live that lifestyle later. As far as using "cultural norms" as an excuse, I agree. But, what most people are doing... it's not cultural norms - it's surviving. Like Italialynn said, sure one's health comes first, but if putting one's health first means living on noodles day in and day out because it's the only thing they can afford.... how is that helping one's health? I'd rather sacrifice a few hours of sleep. And as a Mod, this thread has gone a bit off topic. If it gets anymore heated, I'll be inclined to close it.

Hi guys. I'll throw in my moderating 2 cents first as yes it has gone overboard. There's a line between adding your opinion and being on the attack, which is how it sounds. From the outset KB. It is the way it's being put across, you are disagreeing with people which is fine, opinions were asked for, but saying 'that's just a crock' is unnecessary and pretty insulting wherever you are reading it I'll continue this in private. Please make sure you reply so I can resolve this. For me, sleep is something I look forward to. Sleep is a luxury for many of us, endo and associated fatigue/ additional chronic fatigue syndrome aside. I'm luckily not working while at uni this year but still I don't get as much sleep as I'd like. 6 is good for me, 8 is what I get on the weekends to make up for the sleep loss. We all get by on different amounts. I know when I'm on my period I just need 10 and cannot function without it. Some days I'm good with just 5, like the last 2 weeks even though I've been ill and stressed. Schernoff, I'd say just go with what you feel, if you're able to sleep as much as you want, great

Also, it's worth remembering that we all have been ill KB, that is the basis of this board. And who can say whether we have been as ill or even more ill than you? It's not exactly something we are competing in

i re read the thread and cant really see anything wrong with KB's points.
She is saying tha the initial comment of needing 9 hours sleep is not necessarily a problem as such as that is pretty much what the average person needs to survive. it was primarily the point being made that sleep needs to take a back seat due to reasons mentioned in the post by anneny which is enough to make anyone angry when some people cant get out of bed in the morning even though they have had 14 hours sleep and others are saying its hard to rustle a measley 9 hours due to choices they have made to do things which are not necessities such as mainaining your appearance, and doing your hair and goign to the gym to keep slim...
i think KB of all people has sacrificed her life - work, income, social life to combat fatigue and if sleep deprivation is really as bad as people are saying then you have to weigh up your options. its tough but its reality.

And then we also have those who can't sleep due to insomnia.
Anyway, tick-tock, thread locked. Sorry, schernoff. Wasn't meant to turn out like this, I know.
