I have a 3 cm cyst on my left ovary detected through trans-vaginal ultrasound yesterday, though it has been felt by me for at least three months. I have a Mirena coil so it is possible, if not likely, that it is a normal cyst. I also have a history of endometriomas. My doctor suggested aspirating it with a needle (ahhhhh!!!) which he claims will "not hurt that much" (yeah ok) but I am a little leery of doing this. Aside from the pain, what if it is an endometrioma? We have decided to wait again for another month (we have been waiting and seeing for three months now). We will measure it again to see if it has changed or gone away. What do you think? My gut tells me not to drain a cyst on an ovary with a history of endometriomas but I know that with the Mirena, normal cysts are a side effect and draining it would relieve some of my pain, at least temporarily.

Hi there, I'd only ever have this done if a cyst was seriously affecting my day to day activities and or pressing against the bowel or ureters, and even then only if surgery would not be appropriate. The reason for this is that needle aspirations are controversial. It is possible by penetrating the ovary with a needle to cause cells to spread or spill and cause trouble. Doctors don't discuss the controveries of needle aspirations with patients. Did your doctor not say to you that especially with a history of endometriomas, a needle aspiration is pretty risky? Can you wait it out for 2 or 3 months? As you say, it's probably a follicular cyst and most likely will go of its own accord. Be well.

thanks for the replys. Its good to have support.
My doctor asked the level of pain and I told him (as I always do) that I can not judge pain. Compared to what? Compared to no pain, its bad, compared to the cramps I endured beofre surgery? Its nothing. I have pain almost everyday, it can be bad enough that it disrupts my life insofar as the only thing I am able to do is go to work, come home, go to bed. I haven't missed any work though and that is generally where I set my bar.
Anyway, I am going to wait and see. I doubt I will be sticking a needle in any sensitive areas anytime soon.
The things we women go through....

HI camille,
I was told by my gyno that if he were to drain the cysts they would just reform. It would bring some immediate relief but they would return if not larger. He said in order for a cyst to go away the wall of it needs to be removed. Let us know what you decide!
