Hi - I'm new and this is a LONG post. After 14 months of thinking that the excruciating, constant pain in my back was actually a back problem, it turns out that I had endometriosis. I had a laparoscopy 4 days ago – a “honkin” chocolate cyst (cut) on my right uterosacral ligament and an adhesion (burned) on the back of my right ovary.
Below is what I have been through and the different (wrong?) diagnosis’s that I received:
Chiropractor (1): Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction. Manipulation for 6 weeks – no relief at all. X-Rays and MRI normal. Show a little arthritis, but nothing to write home about. Suggested to ride a recumbent bike and work with ball exercises – no relief at all (3 months, 5x/week).
Chinese Acupressure: Pinched sciatic nerve. Manipulation for 3 months, 2x/week – no relief.
Podiatrist: Leg length discrepancy. Fitted for inserts. Very little relief.
D.O. (1): Nothing is wrong. Ordered Physical therapy for 4-6 weeks, didn’t go since I was already doing physical therapy.
OB/GYN: Possibly pre-menopausal. Pelvic ultrasound normal.
Pain Management M.D.: Robaxin (muscle relaxant), (3) Epidural spine injections, (1) Sacroiliac injection, (1) nerve block. No relief at all, but the injections triggered my menstrual cycle every 2 weeks for 8 weeks and caused me to gain 10 pounds.
Chiropractor (2): X-Rays showed 23-degree lumbar curve (scoliosis). Manipulation 3x/week for 6 weeks. No relief.
D.O. (2): X-Rays showed 30-degree lumbar, 13 thoracic curves, other than scoliosis, nothing is wrong mechanically. Blood results: MCH high, ANA screen positive, anti nuclear antibodies high. Bone scan negative (no broken bones) and leg length test normal.
Rheumatologist: Definitely arthritis. Meloxicam 1x/day should eliminate the pain in 2 days. NO relief what so ever.
It was only after I had a pelvic CT scan that showed an enlarged appendix and upon going to another doctor and her sending me BACK to my OB/GYN begging (why do we have to beg?) for the laparoscopy that it was finally diagnosed. I am reaching out and telling all of you this in hopes that I can alter the length of time it may take for a correct diagnosis for one of you.
Has anyone else had experience with this? As I said in my introduction, I think that I was in denial. I have found through this board and others that I had a lot of the definites for endo - positive ANA, scoliosis, HORRENDOUS back pain. Now that it is diagnosed correctly, I am feeling kind of like I was not taken seriously. However, I want to move forward positively in my recovery and lick this awful disease. I hope that I can be of help to others who have had similarities to my story.
