Posted by member Nari in another thread. Okay ladies. Thought I would sit and let you know how I have been feeling and what has been going on with me since the doctor has started me on some medications for PCOS and insulin resistance. I take a BCP and Metformin. Today is 12 days since my doctors appointment and beginning the medication. I have lost 6 1/2 pounds, my acne is beginning to clear and I am not shedding hair like my cats do when the season changes. Although I have no period yet. Havent had one since....March, I assume that at the end of the pack of BCP's I will start. I cant believe that I am actually dropping weight. I have not been able to loose anything no matter what I did (for a few years), all I was able to do was manage to gain weight instead. The pain that I was having has lightened up considerably. Matter of a fact... it has been 5 days since I had to take anything to tolerate the pain. I have purchased three books related to insulin resistance, PCOS and Syndrome X. Reading through them, my husband has come to find out that he too is insulin resistant. We started the diet this morning. I figure that if all continues like it has been, by the time my kids come back from summer vacation on August 2nd, I should be a real nice size and by then my body and all of the out of whack hormones should be leveled out and I can be fairly normal! ;D ;D I havent said anything to my kids about me loosing any weight, it will be a suprise if it all keeps up. I must give a great big Thanks to Ouchy, she has been great help to me and understanding this whole thing. I am very grateful for her support!! ((((HUGZ))))

Well I finally had my period. I went 100 days with no cycle, and then it happened. Still pain. Crazy pain. Wasnt constant and wasnt even almost regular or predictable. The cycle lasted for 12 days! It is over now though and I feel much better. I didnt have any pain until this morning when I woke up. A few hours later, its gone. Go figure?! But hey...I'm not complaining; thats for sure! My weight loss has slowed almost to a halt, and I think I do need an increase on my medication. I also have to wait to call the doctor until Monday, as Independance Day and the next few days after is a "down day" for these people here. I imagine all will be well though, I know the doctor wants me to have another sono soon to check on the cysts, so this is all right on time. Will keep you updated.

^I wonder if the weight loss is slowing down bc your hormones are now regulated. Any way you could ask your doc about instead of increasing the dosage if you could keep taking the Metformin and ease in to the diet? It would be doing the same thing as Metformin, only give it a little boost? Definitely something worth discussing. Before increasing it, he may want to see if it makes you ovulate on time this month. Usually if you still dont' ovulate, they increase the dose.

Yeah, that is a thought too. I also read in my book A Patients Guide to PCOS, that this doctor starts patients out on 500 mg once a day and then about 2 weeks later increases it to 500 mg twice a day that, he gradually increases the dose according to symptoms. The max dose is 2,000 per day. I have started to implement the diet a bit. So, we will see how this all goes. I mean hey, I dont know.. maybe because it is hot and humid I am retaining fluid, and or something *sigh* I am sure it will get all figured out.. BTW.. diet is working for my husband! he has lost I think he said.... 8 pounds??

That's awesome!!!! Tell him I'm proud of him!!! I'm super proud of you, too! I was on the lowest dose (I think that's 500mg, right?) for a month to see if would induce ovulation. I was lucky in that it did. OOOOH! You should chart your cycles!

HAHA!! Ya'll are silly. *smile* But seriously, I am also on BCP's so im not ovulating. My concern is not my fertility, Have enough lil ones in my house. We're finished. My issue is the whole menstrual cycle, staying healthy and having a period thing.

^Yah. When you get off the pill. That way you'll be able to see if the metformin is working the way it should and all. You don't even have real periods while on the pill. It's all either breakthrough or withdrawl bleeds.

Okay went for my follow up. I am going in for another sonogram next week. But tell me something. Why in the world did my doctor say today that " It seems like Im a prime candidate for PCOS and that it wasnt a one time thing" ?? PCOS is not something that you can catch and go away like a dang cold. I had to tell him about himself again today. This is tiring. I need to have my PHD at this rate. Heck, most all of us do, we seem to be smarter than the doctors that treat us. Another thing. My gyn gave me (back in November '06) Fioricet for my pain. That contains caffiene. MKay.... Well we all know that in the world of endo, pcos and pelvic pain we should avoid caffiene. So now. just today he says something about it when he has seen me off and on since January, and knew I was on it. I just told him, look. I avoid those beverages, and the medication when I do NEED to take it, does help with my pain. The caffiene in the med does not seem to make it worse. If he was so concerned.. he would of changed it 7 months ago. Yes?? Anway, seems like I am doing alright on the medications to help with my PCOS. Personally think that the heavy bleeding this cycle and clotting is from that Fibroid tumor that one docor told me was noted in a sonogram that this doc says is gone. I guess we will see what they see next week when I go for yet another sono....... *sigh*

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE both Fioricet and Fiorinol! (Warning: Fiorinol has aspirin in it as well.) My OBGYN told me to take Fioricet if I wanted after my laparoscopy for pain in addition to the hydrocodone. I have prescriptions for both for migraines. You can inform the doctor that caffeine actually shrinks blood vessels, so it could potentially be a good thing!
Good luck w/ your sono!

Ok so my gynae said i have poly cystic ovaries but not the "syndrome". I have had an internal ultrasound which showed the poly cystic ovaries but thinking i should be tested to rule out the syndrome for sure, he said that he could do some blood tests to check for this? Is there anyone else that has been told this? He didnt seem too concerned about it and im thinking i will ask about it when i go back for my next appointment? any thoughts?
