I went to see it yesterday. I thought it was really good, but it was absolutely terrifying. It was probably the scariest movie I've ever seen. It is certainly not for the faint of heart, but it is a very well-done movie and very complex. I was curious to know what other people thought of it, if anyone else saw it.

I know that, ouchy, and this is definitely not one you should see. I was wondering if anyone DID see it.

LOL, well, it's a very good movie, though it is a little traumatizing. It has an interesting blend between a fantasy world and the reality of Franco's Spain. The scenes involving Franco's Spain are the scariest parts. There is a lot of violence, some of it quite sudden and shocking. One of the fantasy sequences is terrifying though. Even my brother admitted that it was terrifying and he usually insists he doesn't think anything is scary even when it's obvious he does.
My brother also said that Pan's Labyrinth is not that gory and violent compared to From Hell. I've never seen From Hell, but if you have and you survived it then Pan's Labyrinth shouldn't be too scary for you.

From Hell wasn't too bad I didn't think. Fantasy horror and Satan type stuff can scare the beejees out of me though. I will defo watch it cos critics here were calling it the film of the year, although it didn't make a big buck cos a lot of people can't be bothered watching subtitled films! xx

Yeah I know what you mean, subtitles are just too much for some people! I knew I had to see the movie fast because it was playing in our special theater that shows independent and foreign movies, and since it only has one screen it only shows each movie for a week or two. Personally I don't have any problem with subtitles. I'll tell you what's weird though: I've seen several subtitled movies in French and German, and even a few in Farsi, but this was my first movie in Spanish. What makes that strange is that I took 4 years of Spanish in high school.
Anyway, as I said I haven't seen From Hell and can't really make a comparison, but my brother said From Hell was more violent than Pan's Labyrinth. Most of the fantasy sequences are creepy, but not scary. The Pale Man scene is the only truly terrifying fantasy scene--when you see it you'll know what I'm talking about. I saw pictures of the Pale Man in reviews and didn't think he looked all that scary, but then I saw the movie and I was about ready to hide under my seat during that part!

I've never been a big fan of scary movies. I haven't seen many, and have only liked a few of the ones I did see. I wanted to see this movie because it was a fantasy and I found it intriguing that they were contrasting a fantasy world with the frightening reality of Franco's Spain. It's not a horror movie like The Shining or something. It sort of defies category. It's half fantasy and half historical fiction. Also frightening is the fact that apparently theaters have had difficulty communicating to parents that they should NOT take their children to see this. Apparently a lot of people hear that it's a fairy tale and completely ignore the R rating! The writer/director has stressed that it's intended to be a fairy tale FOR ADULTS. The child actress who played the starring role isn't even old enough to see her own movie(in my opinion, I don't know if she's seen it or not)! I feel very sorry for the children who were dragged off to see it by their slow-witted parents.

I have just seen Pan's Labyrinth and it was excellent. Better than I could have thought. The pale man scene, definitely not for children to see. And the violence was pretty nasty I agree. Bravo to Guillermo Del Toro, and the girl who played Ofelia! xx

Oh no Shona don't let that one scene put you off, as erzulie said it is very much a grown up fairytale, and an excellent film in all, very interesting to watch. You can always whizz through the scary bits! I'm really glad I saw it now, it's so different xx
