my doctor told me that i have general anxiety disorder; and that i internalize a lot of my stress, causing my conditions to worsen. i explained to her that when i get upset or whatever, my nerves are not the greatest and i tend to start feeling sick and what not. so first she gives me buspar and says to try it for at least a week. every day that i took it i got a pounding headache and felt like complete he**. so now she wants me to try some anti depressant called celexa. i did a little research and it seems they are all in the SSRI class...not really what i wanted to try. i explained that i am not depessed just have bad nerves and the nurse said to still try it because it helps different people in different ways. to be honest, i don't want to be trying and wasting money on all kinds of different meds. i had asked for a low dose of ativan (my mom takes that and gave me one, it helped a lot) but she said that is very addictive and is giving me SSRI's instead.... thanks

I was given Celexa while I was being stalked. I can say that it did help a lot. Kind of suspended the situation while I was floating above it? LOL. Best way I can describe it!
However, if you are NOT depressed, I'd think twice about taking it. On the flip side of that, if you have IBS, SSRI's can help with that, suprisingly!

Hi, I was on Celexa (known in the UK as Citalopram or Cipramil) donkeys years ago. It can make you gain weight but I didn't notice it really making a difference to anxiety. I've tried valium for anxiety and insomnia and compared it with valerian (herbal tincture) for the same. I find valerian much more effective for insomnia than valium, but valium is good for anxiety. The issue with it is that valium CAN be addictive, but valerian is not. The other thing you must bear in mind with all prescription anti-anxiety drugs and anti-depressants is that they lower bone density. Particularly if you have been on GnRH analogue injections such as Lupron, Zoladex, etc and have lowered bone density because of these, you should bear this in mind. The other thing that springs to mind about "internalising stress" is that putting anti-anxiety drugs inside instead of finding some sort of healthy expression or way of releasing or turning these feelings around, is that you're swallowing your problem, if you catch my drift. Maybe you need to find a doctor who will help you manage these feelings, rather than medicate them.

i take ativan when i am feeling extremely anxious and out of control. My dosage is 1mg but i only take half at a time so i can function while at work. it makes a world of a difference in my emotions and helps me to stabilize. My therapist says i should consider an anti-depression medication because ativan is so addictive, but i only take it when i feel its absolutely necessary and i only take a half. My prescript says im suppose to take it 1-3 times a day!! I can totally see it being addiciting at that rate. I hope you find something that works tfaith!

ohh i still am sitting on the fence whether or not to try the celexa. for some reason i am freaked out by these SSRIs...maybe i have just heard too much negative and not enough positive to try it ? i do agree that i shouldn't just mask the problem, or underlying issues, whatever they may be....but it is not all me that the problems are about. a lot of people around me are always having a lot of problems, and i am the one that always wants/tries/does help out....to where sometimes i feel like i am carrying other peoples burdens i guess. but i don't just want to stop listening and helping people out ya know? i guess what i am saying is i don't want to be numb to the world. i also don't want to be sick though....i may try the first celexa tonite after work and see what happens, i may as well since i bought the rx! one of my friends said her doc has put her on all kinds of ssri's and that lexapro was the only one that didn't make her feel sick or have weight gain, but it was too expensive i guess...

jjuls22....
I have been on Celexa for just about over a year now, I did recently go back to the dr and have the dosage up'd but otherwise I think it is helping me!! I could tell a difference when I started it a year ago that was 20mg and since starting the 40mg my husband says he can tell a difference in me.
I have tried others like Paxil and Wellbutrin, and so far the Celexa seems to not put me in a fog or give me yucky feelings if I skip it one day. Good luck with it I hope it works.
