I am working with my doctor for conception and today they did an ultrasound (on day 12) and found that I have 3 follicles ready to mature. I should ovulate in 3-4 days (based on past months). Anyway, my doctor prescribed Metformin for me to take once a day this week and then twice a day starting next week. They had said it helps with ovulation (even though I have no issue with that). I looked this drug up online and it is for type 2 diabetes. I wish I had asked more questions about this while at the doctors. I just asked what it was and why they were prescribing it. They said that it takes the excess sugar out of my system and causes ovulation.
This is what my insurance's website says about the drug: USES: Metformin is used with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes). Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent heart disease, strokes, kidney disease, blindness, circulation problems, and decreased sexual ability. Metformin belongs to the class of drugs known as biguanides. It works by helping to restore your body's proper response to the insulin you naturally produce, and by decreasing the amount of sugar that your liver makes and that your stomach/intestines absorb.
PRECAUTION: This medication can cause changes in the menstrual cycle (promote ovulation) and increase the risk of becoming pregnant.
Has anyone else been prescribed this drug in relation to fertility?

I was given Metformin to induce ovulation/regulate my cycles. My doctor saw by my long cycles and case history that I likely had PCOS and wrote an rx for Metformin. It shortened my cycles by several weeks, allowing me to ovulate for the first time "on time"--ever! Did he mention anything about PCOS to you? If you don't have any symptoms, I'd seek a second opinion on taking it. If you don't have insulin resistance (pre-diabetes), it can drop your blood sugar too much, leading to hypoglycemia.

Thanks Oucy and Denna!
No, my doctor never mentioned PCOS and I never have an issue with ovulating. I was a little confused too but he is an expert so I trust him. This is the first fertility/ovulation medicine I've been on. I did find out from my sister that she was on Metformin with Clomid and I read that is a good combination.
Thanks for the luck...I hope it works!

My cousin was trying for over a year to get pregnant and didn't. They couldn't afford fertility specialists so her primary care gave her glucophage to take. Diabetes drug too. She was pregnant in no time after that. So it worked for her.

Yah. Metformin is generic Glucophage. I guess a lot of doctors can look at us and figure if we have some level of insulin resistance. Apparently, if your tummy measures over a certain number, there has to be some level of insulin resistance. I guess it makes sense.

My doctor tried to convince me to take it, but I told him I would do it on my own. Proper diet and chromium keep my blood glucose normal.
