I'm waiting for my AFP results to come back. My husband and I are also being screened for Tay-Sachs. We've both decided that if the AFP comes back + that we'll go ahead for an amnio or CVS and if the baby will have Down's that we'll abort. That's a tough decision, but I'm glad I'm low risk. I guess we'd do the same thing for Tay-Sachs.

Thanks, gemini. I'm actually not worried at all. We already have a game plan should something be wrong, so I'm not worried at all. Thanks for your thoughts.

How far are you now? I will be having mine done in a few weeks! I am a little nervous as I think most parents would be, but I too am low risk. We have discussed what wold happen if it comes back positive and have weighed our options. But regardless it is a tough decision to make.
How long do you have to wait for your results? Hope everything turns our ok!

I'm 16weeks 5days, but I had it done at exactly 16weeks. I think the results come back at the end of this week or the next. Thanks. I'm sure everything will be fine. I hope yours come back great, too!

In early June I'm having an ultrascreen (an ultrasound where they check the baby's neck and bloodwork) - it has something like a 91% accuracy in detecting Downs (without an amnio). I'm also low-risk, but even if it comes out positive, we'll still have the baby.

how do they check the baby's bloodwork without touching the baby? the maternal and fetal blood supplies don't mix. Is what you're talking about actually where they look at the flow patterns of the fetal blood through imaging--not actually check bloodwork?
I'm having a diagnostic ultrasound in mid june that checks the baby's organs (even ovaries if it's a girl), spine, cleft palate, brain etc.

They check my blood, not the baby's. "The blood test measures two different chemicals present during pregnancy. The two tests are a fee Beta Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (free Beta) and Pregnancy Associated Plasma Protein A (PAPP-A)."
The Ultra-Screen "...consists of an ultrasound and blood testing. This combination of tests helps to identify babies who may have Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18), Trisomy 13 and possibly other chromosomal abnormalities. This combination of tests has been studied extensively and has been shown to detect 91% of Down Syndrome pregnancies and 95% of Trisomy 18 and 13 pregnancies. ... The ultrasound has to be performed between 11-14 weeks gestation. Your blood will also be drawn at this time. The ultrasound measures the amount of fluid behind the baby's neck called Nuchal Translucency (N.T.). ..."

In early June I'm having an ultrascreen (an ultrasound where they check the baby's neck and bloodwork) By "checking the baby's bloodwork," I was confused of how they would do that w/out an invasive procedure. They're actually checking YOUR bloodwork, just like mine.
