I believe the scale starts at 1, which is a minor case and then goes up to 4. being worse case I could be wrong, but i havent heard too many people saying they have level 5 endo, ive heard lots of 3's and 4's on the board.

There are four stages of Endometriosis, however, like jjules said - I do believe there can be a fifth. My Dr said stages are "old school", though. I'm not sure how many other docs have this point of view, but my Dr is more concerned with where is the endo vs what stage, know what I mean??

Thanks Both, Just went to the doctors this afternnon and he told me this. Just came as a bit of a shock as I was never told this before. Also he informed me that I may have some trouble when I try to start for a family (34 now). Just the surgeon told me that there should not be a problem even thought I have only 1 ovary now and only 1 working tube (opposite ovary and tube). Confused now and feeling a bit down now.

My doctor used the term stage, although he related my stage 3 to the severity/aggression rather than the fertility issues that a lot of the stage definitions refer to. So in that way he may think like your doctor tess. I had read about stage 5, though the way it was described, it sounded to me like endo invading the bowels and bladder. Which, though devastating, can't be described as more severe than the other stages when some women have complications with invading endo but no fertility problems and vice-versa. Ali, ask your surgeon to clarify. It's best to know exactly what they're on about, and it will lay your mind to rest, it sounds very confusing I understand! A lot of members here tend to talk about the endo as a whole or it's various effects, rather than stages. There are differing opinions on 'stages' and levels, so we just go by how it affects us. Some women have had what is considered stage 4 and only found out by accident. Chin up chuck

Yes, it seems as so Cherry. And its true, Dr mentioned last time I saw him that he did a lap on a women with horrible endo and she never had a pain in her life. Interesting isn't it? How our brains and bodies receive things so different?
