I had my laparotomy 3 weeks ago. One of the incisions around my bikini line has a hard lump under it, and it's painful. That particular incision area was giving me a lot of sharp, tearing pain the day after the surgery. Then that hard lump formed and it still hurts. I'm so worried. I tried to walk slowly on the treadmill just to get some exercise tonight and the pain in that area was really bad. I want to get back to my yoga but I'm scared. I know you aren't all doctors, but does anyone have any insights into this? Is this scar tissue or....? if so, why would it hurt?

I had one like that after my first laprascope, it went away after a while, i suspect it was just a small haematoma (kinda like an internal bruise). If ur worried but, call ur doctor, tell em whats happening. I think mine only hurt if i pushed on it, better to check and ease your mind.

I second what kb said, I found my lumps were there (under my incision scars) for 2 months, now I can only feel little ripples under my skin. Even the right incision which was worrying me bit. Don't worry, give it a little time and concentrate on getting better

Same here, all of my incisions had hard lumps under. And the ones around my bikini line were the most painful but I put it down to the location. If you are really concerned then it wouldnt hurt to phone your doctor even just to put your mind at rest so you can then concentrate on getting better.

Same here. Took several months for mine to go away. Now, I have one long one that is under my c-section incision! I was told to massage the ones after my lap to help them dissolve more quickly. Call your doctor to be sure, though.

If the lump persists, it could be an endometrioma. I developed one shortly after my c-section. It is the endometriosis, which has travelled up through the incision site, usually because the surgeon did not irrigate the area good enough. I hope you don't have this, but it sounds similar. I am scheduled for surgery after four long years of pain with mine. It continued to grow from a small pea size bump to a 3 cm tumor/endometrioma. Every time I have a period, try to exercise (including yoga), it is excruciating at the site of my old c-section and feels like it is ripping open all over again. You should have it checked right away...

I have a question and I thought I would post under this thread since it's kind of relevant. The discharge instructions stated to contact the MD if a hematoma develops around the incision. Something isn't right with that incision and I'm 99% positive it's not an infection. The entire belly button is bruised with a small section around it and it is very sore to touch, some pain with movement, and it's hard to the touch in that area, but I would not classify it as a lump. It sounds to me like a small hematoma, which I wouldn't have thought twice about if it wasn't for the nurse. Does anyone know why the MD would have to be contacted for this and what the risk is? It's definitely different than any of my other incisions, but I feel like I'd be jumping the gun calling my MD for something that seems so minor and that I would expect a week after surgery. I know that we aren't medical professionals, and that if I'm worried I should contact him, but I'd like to know why this could be problematic. If anyone could shed some light on this, I would appreciate it.
Thanks! Stacey

I dont think a haematoma is anything to worry about. Its more that doctors want to be kept in the loop about whats going on in case it is serious. The point is they dont want us to judge that, its better they know about something minor and say its nothing to worry bout, then have someone not tell them something coz they think its petty.
Fact is, doesnt hurt to call and check.

I have to agree with the other girls. I've had 6 laps and after each of them- and checking all my scars right now, some still have a little lump under them. They will go away after time. I think it is just your body healing on the inside. Keep in mind that in those little holes they cut, they do alot of digging around and poking, so they will be quite tender for a while. If you haven't had your post op checkup yet, I'd bring it up then. I always go with my gut though, and if you are truly worried give them a call. Usually the nurses that you end up talking to, are pretty good at telling whether or not you need to come in. My last surgery was over 4 months ago and I still have purple scars, and a little lump under them. Just be gentle especially with a laparotomy, the incision is going to be bigger like with a c section and it is going to take a lot longer for it to heal up. The gal I work with had a c section almost a year ago, and she still complains about how tender it is sometimes. When I had the lump removed from my breast, they said I could get sharp stabbing pains in the incision site for up to a year afterwards. I too had a lump there too under the incision for quite a while afterwards, and that is about a 2 inch incision. Give them a call if you are really worried, it will help with some reassurance, and sometimes you just need to hear it from your doctor. They are the professionals after all.
