Hello! Have any of you had 1 ovary removed? I am scheduled for a laparoscopy on April 20 where 1 of things my doctor is planning to do is remove my right ovary. Between cysts, endo, and a slow leak from my appendix (now removed - whew!) my right ovary is in pretty bad shape. I have limited my doctor to laparoscopy for now -- with a new job, I don't have the leave for the healing time for the big cut! Hopefully she will be able to get everything accomplished with the little cut! What has been your experience with only 1 ovary? Any weird hormonal changes or lighter periods (I dare to dream - ) or anything else? Thank you in advance as I look forward to learning from you all! Karen

Hey Karen! I am also scheduled for a lap on the 20th!! I have a chocolate cyst that has encased my left ovary. I am not positive as to whether I'll have it removed (its a good chance though) so I'd be interested to get any of the same info as you! Thanks for posting this!

I had part of each ovary removed in December. I had an apple-sized endometrioma on my right ovary, and a grapefruit-sized endometrioma on my left ovary (and was diagnosed with stage 4, severe endo). I don't know if it is related or not, but before the surgery I ovulated just fine (as far as I know), but after I stopped ovulating regularly and started getting functional cysts (which aren't a big deal, but they did put off a cycle of IVF).
My mom had her left ovary totally removed and her right ovary 1/2 removed due to stage 4 endo (severe) and grapefruit-sized endometriomas. She actually went on to have both me and my brother several years later. I don't think she had any negative effects.

Thank you for the info akcheryl!! Anything info is appreciated! How much better did you feel with those montrous endometioma removed from you? I hope much, much better! That is interesting about the ovulation....something to watch for! Angelas -- same surgery day -- cool! What are you having done? I'm starting to get pretty nervous -- hwo bout you? I've had 2 laps -- the first to remove a violin string adhesion which felt the need to tie both ovaries to the back of my uterus then the whole mess to the back wall, and the second to remove appendix & endo removal. I'm nervous I guess cus I don't know what to expect. The adhesion removal was great -- I felt better instantly (well, I think the first few instances were thanks to whatever kind of pain meds they gave me) but was back at work two days later! The appendix & endo removal though -- that kept me out a week, and even then all I could do was sit at my desk feeling just awful! I'm wondering if it'll longer to recover from the ovary & endo removal. Wish I knew what to expect! I have read every lap story here -- and cannot tell you how great they are! And -- not knowing what will happen with the ovary thing -- well, just increases the anxiety I guess. Again, thank you -- you are absolute life savers!

I have had my right ovary removed, I had to have the big cut, wasn't soooo bad just the first 3 days after surgery was the hardest. For a while after surgery I cried easy, becasue my hormones where out of wack but they leveled off and I was fine. The advice I have is don't watch any sapy chic flicks or anything that has alot of emothion cause if you where anything like me, I cried everytime anything emotional came on. I think it lasted about a month I'm not totally sure. But what I am sure about is that it was like I had this sense of clearness. Before surgery I didn't realise that everything was foggy and then efter I felt really clear headed. It was a pretty cool feeling!
Good Luck!

Thank you so much for the info Hillary! It's good to hear that it wasn't sooooo bad. Now the emotional thing could be a problem for me....heck, I get waaay emotional already! Add pms to the mix -- yikes -- I'll cry at a cereal commercial! But -- I am so glad that this is something I can be aware of up front! I figure if I warn my boyfriend & coworkers -- maybe it won't be so bad! Again, thank you for the info! Any other info you can think to pass on would be greatly appreciated! Karen

Hey Karen! I am definitley starting to get nervous! It's almost like my future is in the hands of this surgery!! I had mentioned in another post that I prepare for the worst so that anything less is a lot easier to deal with! The biggest concern is that I have an endometrioma on my left ovary (size of an apple) thats hemorraging, maybe that ovary will have to come with it. I am also having the dye test done, and a scope into the uterus. My appendix is also a possiblity, as well as any other 'crap' they find in there! I've been asked to take 2 weeks bare minimum - and thats only if they find minimal problems. It's been over 4 years since my last lap, so I'm pretty anxious to find out! Not to mention the fact that the dye test will determine my chances for conception - thats the scariest part for me right now! It really does suck though as far as planning ahead for things like going back to work and such since they never know forsure until they look inside! Once we have our operations we'll have to post our stories! Especially about the ovary removal - thats pretty scary! I'm afraid I'll go in thinking I'm just having a 'routine' lap and come out with the 'big cut'! As long as they fix me I'm ready!!
Good luck Karen!! And if you need to chat or anything in the days coming up feel free to PM me! I know I'll be a wreck!! *hugs*

That is so nice! Think about how much better you are going to feel!!!!! I had my appendix out after complaining about it for 2 years! After undergoing colonoscopies, endoscopies, being diagnosed with IBS & taking all those meds, my gyn had the courage to go in & apparently it had been leaking & healing for some time -- it was amazing that I didn't die! It did cause some other problems cus it was left so long....grrr! YES -- we will hafta write about it! I'm so curious about what will happen! I did tell my dr that NO BIG CUT!!! If I need a big cut -- we will do that another time after discussing all the options, etc. If you're not ready for the big cut & aren't sure if it's medically necessary -- then talk to your dr about it! Are you staying overnight? I'm not scheduled to at present...but when I'm not able to pee and have pissed off all the nurses and it's midnite -- well, they might let me stay!!! PM me too if you want to talk! Here's nervous for you -- I've picked out my outfit to wear to surgery! How dorky!!!!!!

ahahhahaa!! don't feel dorky about picking your outfit!! I've done that too! and the pads I'll bring just incase! ahhaa!! I'm not scheduled to stay overnight either at this point - but they have said its a possibility! Right now I would be totally ok with having the big cut. I've been off work since Feb 8th already and they are super supportive! I figure that with my past and what I want in the future I may as well get it all over with at once! Thats why I agreed to have the other 2 tests done at the same time since I hear both are rather painful when done on their own...
I am going to start another thread about the appendix since I'm really curious as to what symptoms you had and all that stuff!
I told her she could take whatever she needed as long as I have my uterus and 1 ovary!! I'm hoping I come out with 2!
Thanks Karen - and I'm sure we'll be chatting more about everything!! I'll be thinkin of ya as my nerves become more and more shot! ahhaa!!

OMG! I totally forgot about pads!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for reminding me!!!!!!! Hey -- when I had surgery before, the hospitals gave me these MONSTER size pads that I think you hafta wear with a belt -- like from when before they had invented adhesive!!!! And NO belt!!!! They are like surplus WWII issue and I don't even think you can buy them anywhere -- and -- here's the kicker -- I got charged $6 for 1 of them!!! I had a cone biopsy done on my cervix, and they were remodeling that hospital so the recovery room was just one big rooms with people in curtains - and like 2 bathrooms across the big room. Well -- I had to go pee so the nurse helped me up & I got up to walk and that giant pad thing fell out -- no undies & no belt for it! It was all bloody & I was still pretty high so I had NO idea what it was! I started screaming that my uterus had just fallen out and scared the s*** out of the nurse and everyone there! She had to explain to me what it was -- which did not sink in very well. So I told her -- apparently VERY loudly -- that she needed to find me something from at least the 1970's to wear and not that ratty-a** old antique. Needless to say -- I was the laughing-stock of the entire recovery area. Now I'm laughing about it!!!

HAHAHAHHAAAA!!! I HAVE TEARS I'M LAUGHING SO HARD!!! Thats exactly why I'm packing my own pads!!! I had a pad that was like a baby change table pad!! I am not risking that again!! I didn't have a belt either, and when they sent me home I had nothing to put in my own underwear!! I know there will be some blood (even though I am not going to have my period) so I'm taking it into my own hands!!
Once you have an ovary removed (and the fallopian tube) I would think you would have some bleeding from that eh?

Hey -- is this GIANT pad thing universal? Seriously -- where are they getting these things??? I went to the drug store tonite after work & even asked if they had the giant pads with the belts -- and the woman laughed at me! So -- where are they getting these things! I think they are frightening!!!!!! Changing table pad....heh, heh, heh! You know -- I'm almost ready to start a rant about them! Seriously -- I don't think that thing would have trouble absorbing every ounce of blood in my body -- and -- I'm not a medical professional -- but I don't think you should be bleeding that much and live!!! Good Lord -- if that thing got too saturated -- it would drag you undies down! OK -- I'm getting way off the subject here -- but am so happy I can laugh about it instead of worrying sick!!! As for the bleeding...if you are having the uterus scope/scrape -- yep -- it'll bleed! I'm pretty sure my period is going to show up a few days early just for my lap! Oh I see this getting messy!!! Thanks again for the heads up on the pad!!!! I already packed them -- HA!!!!!

AHHAHAHHAA!! IT'S TOTALLY UNIVERSAL!! and I think you SHOULD start a thread about them!! I could add a few more comments and stories on that forsure!! 2 more words PAPER SHORTS??? yep - we need to start a thread!! I am so glad we can laugh about it too! It lessens the stress a bit forsure!
and thanks for the heads up on the bleeding from the scope and such - atleast I won't be surprised now when I find that between my legs!! HA!
